Visited this place twice in the last week, both times on my own, sitting at the bar.

The Black Tomato is one of those upper class dining places in Ottawa that just happens to have a great beer selection. The selection is top notch with two local offerings, a Beau's, and numerous other Ontario beers on tap, plus 6 from St. Ambroise. A number aren't available at the LCBO, which is a huge bonus.

Service has been top notch, with nobody being pushy, and offering samples of anything I was curious about.

The atmosphere is quiet, with hip music playing over conversations at wooden tables. The copper bar top is home to one or two people with a chatty bartender talking about new music and local shows.

A good place for a pint of something you've never tried in Ottawa. Perhaps the best 'beer bar' in Ottawa.

I've worked very near to this place for over 6 months ago and just discovered that they have quite a good selection of draught beer. While the list isn't long, they do have half a dozen very respectable Ontario craft brews on top, including a couple I haven't seen anywhere else in Ottawa. The food was pretty good too, and while it wasn't cheap ($14-16 for lunch entrees), it's certainly a better deal than some of the neighbouring venues. It's more of a restaurant than a bar, but the selection is solid by Ottawa standards. I'll be going back.

An excellent place to to sample local beers from Ontario and Quebec. Knowledgeable and helpful bartender who was very willing to pour samples from the 24 beers on tap. A "must-visit" for anyone from out-of-town who is seeking good craft beer. I visited on a Monday night so it was quiet and allowed for a good dialogue with the bartender which was very useful. The best beer I sampled was the Mushoka Brewery Mad Tom IPA which was excellent. Like the Chinook and Centennial hops. I would definitely go back to this place.

The Black Tomato is a somewhat upscale bistro type of place with a very small bar and a very nice selection of local beer. The bar man Steve is clearly very passionate about local brews and has a great range of selections from Neustandt, Church Key, Beau's and St Ambroise. You won't find a better place in Ottawa to sample local Ontario brews on tap. Steve relegates the mainstream beers to bottles and its hard to watch people ordering them when such a great selection of local brews are sitting on tap ready to please.
