Appearance- The beer poured a deep black color with a light mocha color head.

Smell - In the big picture, the nose is cinnamon and raisins.

Taste - I would describe this beer as chocolate raisin bread that shoots fire down my throat. The cinnamon does not overwhelm, but there a definite sense of spice in the back. The dark chocolate in the aftertaste is fantastic.

Mouthfeel- The thickness allows the burn to scorch the throat for a while.

Overall - As far as dessert stouts go, this beer deserves attention.

The beer is black in color. Tiny tan head that recedes rapidly.
Aroma of chocolate and vanilla, a little coffee.
Milk chocolate taste, vanilla, hint of coffee.
Creamy, smooth mouthfeel. Alcohol becomes apparent as it warms.
I enjoyed this beer.

these are mostly barrel aged now from what i gather, but had the chance to drink the no barrel version from 2016 this weekend, its both nice beer and holding up well, although to some extend unremarkable at this point, beyond the obvious mellowing with age, its not overly interesting or anything, and does in fact seem like a base beer for barrels and added flavors as much as it stands on its own. nice deep brown color to it, still some head on this old keg, and with a full middle malt palate ranging from chocolate to tobacco, toffee, caramel, coffee, and raisin, the depth is in the middle not on the low end, which is lightly bitter from the roast but somewhat lighter than the more current versions of this, at least it seems that way to me. its quite dry as these go, relatively clean on the fermentation too, and without the oxidation that plagues a lot of these older brews. a hint of stale black coffee is all. its cool to taste the base on its own, especially with all this time on it, but i much prefer the variants in the barrels that have come out in recent years. this is sturdy and good though, aged quite well.

Twelve Gauge Barrel Aged Imperial Stout 2019
Review Date: 07/01/20

Aroma
Malt - Dark roast, bitter chocolate, burnt/stale coffee
Hops - Low to none
Yeast - Low to none
Intense barrel aromatics of vanilla and rose (alcohols)

Appearance
Black (opaque) with a tan head. The beer head is small in size and has poor retention. The head texture is open.

Flavor
Malt - Bitter chocolate, coffee
Hops - Low to none. Bitterness is moderate, although it feels mostly derived from the dark malts.
Yeast - None discernable
Definite bourbon and vanilla note from the barrel aging.

Mouthfeel
Carbonation is low to moderately low. The body is full (whole milk). There is a slight alcohol warming. There is a mild creaminess. No noticeable astringency.

Overall I felt that the flavors of this beer were a bit heavy and not as well integrated as they could have been. The malt, while dark and roasty, as well as slightly acidic and was, in my opinion, out of balance without any residual sweetness to offset it. There were definite aromas of vanilla and bourbon that indicated the barrel aging. These flavors felt separate and not necessarily integrated with the beer itself.

Dark black and chocolaty, velvety smooth with roast grain goodness. Higher ABV only evident with a little warmth. Nicely done! This one makes winter worth waiting for!

The 22 oz. bottle was brought over by a friend. The cap is dipped in what could be wax, a bit difficult to open and some clean up afterwards. I was hoping the effort was worthwhile. It poured black into a 12 oz. glass, the head lite, lacking the richness I was expecting. Aroma simple, I drew in more smell through my nostrils waiting for the blast from the 12 gauge stout, nothing but a whimper no complex aromatics. The first few swallows left the palette wanting. Where was the richness, the taste of dark chocolate, toasted caramel malt, bittersweet coffee? I splashed more into my mouth thinking my receptors for taste had missed something the first time, the results were the same. Very simple, as complex as a round stone. Hoping for better, this 12 gauge missed fired.. Cheers

Type: Draft
Glass: 10-oz. glass
From: The Taphouse in Boise, Idaho
Price: $5
Purchased: Dec. 19, 2013
Consumed: Dec. 19, 2013
Misc.: 2012 batch

Poured a pitch black color with one finger of tan head when I got it. Uneven spots of lacing with below average retention.

Smelled chocolate, Jack Daniels, dark chocolate, caramel and faint molasses.

Tasted a little smoother than the smell. Caramel, chocolate, toffee, chocolate milk, dark chocolate and light coffee beans.

Full body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth finish.

So smooth and very good overall.

On-tap @ Gernika's, Boise ID. Served in a snifter.

A: Dark, opaque black body with a small amount of tan head.

S: Roasted barley, caramel, dark chocolate, hints of molasses and leather.

T: More darker/toasted caramel and chocolate; more sweet than roasted but not over-the-top sweet by any means.

MF: Fuller-bodied with low carbonation.

O: A decent drinker, a quality big stout without the bells or whistles. Alcohol is well-hidden.
