I give this beer a 4 only because it was a delightful surprise. I sneered as I prepared to taste another disgusting fruit beer of my wife's. This is one of the best approaches to blueberry beers I've ever had, great hoppy body and a dry, not sweet, finish. The fact that this is a blueberry pale ale should tickle even the pickiest of beer nerds curiosities. But I understand it's not for everyone, to each their own. Also contrary to this site this beer is not retired, I had it at Jack Russel's yesterday. If your on Apple Hill, this brewery is worth the visit.

This beer must warm up considerably before drinking. I poured it cold, and it looked alright with a nice bit of head. Zero aroma as it was poured out of the fridge. After a good warming, the scent of blueberries is strong and inviting. Flavor begins with a bit of wheat and a somewhat overpowering (for this style) hop bitterness. Fairly neutral flavor is a letdown after the lovely blueberry aroma. Finishes dry. A bit rough especially with the hops.

Overall: Drink this beer warm to smell the blueberries. Interesting beer but not one I would return to soon.

Part of a mixed 12-pack that I recently bought from the Jack Russell Brewing Co. I ordered it directly from their Website, the service was excellent, both packing & delivery was spot-on.

Jack Russell Blueberry Beer comes in a 12oz tall, thin neck bottle. It has just the one main obverse label, which has a fading dark to light blue dark background with an inverted golden horseshoe. Inside the horseshoe is a sprig of blueberries, whilst a small Union Jack sits on the lower part of the horseshoe. No Freshness Date, but listed with a Strength of 5.0% ABV.

It poured with a copper-bronze body, held to the light it is perfectly lucid with zero activity. A dirty white head is comprised mainly of large bubbles that congregate and cling together to form a head that you can see through in places. Minimal amounts of lacing, low levels of carbonation that is still enough to replenish the head when swirled.

The aroma is toasted malts and blueberries, but the fruit is not overpowering, more of a parallel sideline. Hints of freshly baked bread and fermenting yeast are deferred to the back end. A malty nose with a hint of freshly picked blueberries.

Toasted Malt and Blueberries form an elixir that positively bolts into the 1600m race from the initial foaming on the tongue, three laps around the 400m circuit and it still has enough strength to cross the finish line with a punchy arms in the air finish on the fourth lap. In fact, it does a lap of honor. This has a marvelous fine-tuned balance; a nice malty ale with enough blueberry flavor to add interest and intrigue, but not enough to totally mask, or blind all the tastes. Finishes as fresh & fruity as it started. Libering blueberryness.

The mouthfeel is creamy at times, it has a dissolving blueberry expanded foam like feel on the tongue. Lingering malts coat the cheeks with a fruity blanket swirl on the upper palate. Fresh feel.

It drinks well, the perfect balance of blueberry flavor in the constitutional profile of this beer make it easy to imbibe. Nicely put together, a very nice malty fruit beer that is yet another quality offering from Jack Russell.

Overall: An accomplished blueberry fruit beer that is neither sickly sweet nor a one-dimensional soda like offering. This is a refreshingly different malty Ale with a lovely blueberry layer. Nicely balanced, it’s another solid beer & a winner from Jack Russell for me.
