Good thirst quencher (summer beer) but doesn't stand out from the crowd.

aroma and taste: malt, bread, lemon and spice

The weakest beer I have tried from the matso's range, although I can see it's appeal and what it's aiming for.

For your typical beer drinker with little experience of craft beer it would be an excellent beer and for most people who are drinking in hot weather and don't want an in-your-face beer, it would also be very good.

As the beer is produced in Broome, where the weather is on the hotter side and many tourists visit, the beer is very good and achieves what it's aiming for.

However, being spoilt with many good quality craft beers with big aromas and flavours it doesn't really compare.

This was my first favourite real pale ale, I love it; hoppy and crisp and perfect for afternoon BBQ's

Bought a six pack and obviously got a bad batch. Zero carbonation. And I mean zero. Like none. I gave it a 1 out of courtesy as I don't mind their mango beer.

Matso's, odd name, thought I would Google Translate it as the label has a Kanji on it and it translated as "approach" in Japanese... yeah well anyway this is the first brew I've had from Broome, a fairly isolated town in northern Western Australia, 2,200 km from Perth, here's hoping it isn't shite.

Poured from a 330ml bottle into a nonic pint.

A: A lagerish clear golden body with a chalk head that subsides to nothing. Looks an awful lot like an awful Aussie macro lager. I will however reserve my judgement for now.

S: More of an English styled Pale Ale aroma than an American one (i.e. less hops more malt), with its biscuit malt base, some golden syrup notes and a hint of fruity hops lingering around back there. Not impressed yet.

T: The taste of this beer is bland and unappealing. Like a mixture of an Aussie macro lager with an ale body and hints of ale flavour. There are notes of biscuit malt, golden syrup, and muted fruity hops, with... and this is just how boring this brew is: soda water. Any beer that has a distinct 'soda water' flavour is doing it wrong.

M: Strangely enough though this beer does have some body, mid to light with a medium carbonation.

D: I'm not even sure what the aim of this beer is, to bore me with pedestrian taste? Perhaps, if so: mission accomplished. It's like the brewers took a half decent English Pale Ale and watered it down with soda water, no joke. Most disappointing then, and I had another Matso's brew to review, not looking forward to that Smoky Bishop now, what a waste of $$$.

Food match: White bread toast minus any condiments or garnishes lest the flavour overpower the beer.

A: Pours clear gol with head that dissipates quickly. Very carbonated like a soft drink.

S: Citrusy, sweet and hoppy slightly.

T: Citrus/fruity tang with a rich hoppy aftertaste.

M: Carbonation leaves a tingly feel in the mouth. Just a little bit watery.

O: Not bad but I've had other pale ales I prefer.

Pours a very pale colour; quite translucent. Head is white, thin rim. Pretty bland.

Smells adjuncty and yeasty. Sweet honey with rice, corn and some barley malt. Not much grounding, just sweet and cloying.

Tastes similar. I guess there's 'standard' beer stylings, but yeah ultimately sweet and yeasty. Corny. Unpleasant.

Bit of body, but not much texture. Pretty awful.

Not a pleasant drop. Cloying, not much character. Might do well for punters in Broome but here, I like my flavour.

Bottle: 330mL brown bottle, funky and classically styled label. Very nicely presented.

Appearance: pours a finger of white head with some lacing over golden body. Fairly standard looking.

Aroma: fairly standard pale ale - grapefruit, passionfruit and piney hops, tiny touch of caramel.

Taste: again, standard pale ale. Very nice, but nothing new. Fruity characteristics with some spice.

Aftertaste: lingers nicely, but nothing amazingly new.

Mouth feel: light in both body and carbonation.

Overall: this beer has a number of good points, and only one bad. It is a fairly standard but nice pale ale - well made and with good sophistication - it is a nice drop. However at AU$76 a case from the brewery (2012), I'd expect to see it from shops for more likely $90 - $100+. Outrageous pricing, considering there are just as good pale ales for half this price. I don't know who is doing the marketing and pricing at Matso's, but this is completely unacceptable.

Pours gold with a small head.
Nose shows grapefruit, passion-fruit and piny hops, along with some spicy notes and faint caramel.
Not as interesting flavours, some faint fruity and floral hops followed by bready malt.
Could use a little more carbonation.

Appearance - 3.0
Pours a finger of white foam head that quickly receded to a thin layer over a clear, golden body.

Smell - 2.5
Very light aroma suggests of apricot, grainy malt and a little sweetcorn (DMS).

Taste - 3.0
Grainy, cracker-like malt flavour, a dab of caramel. Moves on to a juicy mid palate with light mandarin and apricot fruitiness. Moderate hop bitterness lingers in the finish.

Mouthfeel - 3.0
Lightly carbonated, although that is almost certainly due to my vigorous swirling in an effort to inhale the very weak aroma. Light bodied, easy to drink fast.

Overall - 3.0
This beer comes as something of a disappointment to me, it seems to be designed for swilling in hot weather without much aroma or flavour getting in the way.

This is a new offering in bottles from this brewery and it pours a clear golden hue which leaves a frothy sudsy two finger head and sporadic little lacing its average looking, the smell is also average with aromas of grains, pale malts and floral hops, the mouthfeel is just over light bodied and has tastes of honey, pale malts,a touch of toffee and finished with a floral hop dryness and overall its average and i would not revisit and in my eyes such a let down from the rest of their lineup it really is i mean the mouthfeel the best part and its easy enough to drink but so is water come on guys forwards not backwards.
