A Märzenbier (Oktoberfest-style) brewed with dulce de leche and flavors inspired by hoja santa. Dulce de leche is a type of milk caramel widely used throughout Latin America. Hoja santa is a large leaf commonly used in Oaxacan cuisine due to the richness in its flavor and aroma. A new seasonal that celebrates the traditional Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

I preferred when they sold this in bottles. A rare occurrence for me as the change from bottles to cans actually made a difference and although the cans ain't shabby, this ultimately tasted better in bottle.

this is tasty beer but i wanted it to be a little more weird and unique with the special ingredients added. i do get a lot of sweetness from the dulce de leche, and i think it contributes a creaminess not commonly found in the style, but aside from the sugary nature of this beer, its not as distinct and latin american as i hoped it would be. with all the sweetness here, its hard to really appreciate it as a lager, but i like the extension of the malt flavors here. its got a light fall spice character, a toasted and nutty nature, warming and hearty for sure, robust and bigger, but not really screaming marzen at me in any meaningful way. i like the caramel note to this, the vanilla richness it has, and the bready grain aspect, its tasty but a small dose thing for me, a few glasses of this seems like a ton, which is not how i normally approach the style. these guys continue to do some really innovative stuff, i just wanted it all to show up a little more in this beer. less german, more mexican, interesting and good, but more of a novelty for me...

Reviewed from notes. Poured from what appears to be a 12 oz. bottle into an El Catador teku glass.
Strangely, there's an apparent typographical error on the label - it declares the bottle to hold "1 Pint, 9.4 fl oz.".
I suspect that it does not...
A: First of all, I was under the mistaken impression this was a milk stout – so I was quite surprised when I started pouring and a hazy, very dark gold liquid came out. It forms a thin white head that fades quickly, and has fairly low visible carbonation.
S: Toasted bready malts, caramel and vanilla, with milder pumpkin-type spices – maybe nutmeg and allspice, light cinnamon – but these remain understated.
T: Rich malts with a nice toasty character. Similar spice character to the nose – they are more prominent in the flavors than on the nose, but they still don’t overwhelm the other stuff going on. There's caramel, toffee, and vanilla, and I’ll buy into some lactose sweetness as well but it’s fairly mild. Malt sweetness and fading spices in the hang.
M: The body is a little heavier than average, with somewhat low carbonation sensation – the combination of which leads to a rich mouthfeel. Low alcohol presence.
O: Not my personal favorite, and I was kinda in the mood for a milk stout. I think I saw dulce de leche or whatever the label said and assumed. But for what seems like a spiced malty beer, it’s not half bad. The spices are obvious but not obnoxious...truly a hard line to walk for most brewers. My only complaints are a bit lower carbonation than I think would have been ideal, and it’s overall pretty sweet – maybe a little more roasty character or just a bit more hops would have balanced this a little more. But not bad.
As usual, scores given are for style. My personal preference for this beer would be a few notches lower.
