Castle Cream AleCastle Cream Ale

Brewed by:
Castle Danger Brewery
Minnesota, United States

Style: Cream Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.30%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Sitting around the kitchen table during our start-up days, the need for a sessionable beer became clear. Our first intern actually came up with the idea to brew a cream ale, so we started designing the recipe. As with all Castle Danger beers, we start with a flavor profile, then expand upon it to create something unique. Castle Cream is our version of a cream ale. Deep gold in color, it has a soft malty aroma, slightly sweet creamy texture with a balanced bitterness, while finishing smooth and clean.

No canning date. Cool designs though, very retro.

Appearance: Muted caramel color with good clarity and a thin topping of white suds. Looks like it will lace well.

Aroma: Cane sugar, caramel, and a bit of earthy hop presence.

Taste: Matches the aroma very well. Smooth 2-row with just a bit of caramel and cane sugar in there. The hops are all about balance here, providing enough IBUs to keep things upbeat but still low in bitterness. A bit of adjunct flavor, corn or maize, that actually sort of brings it all together. Smooth finish with a balanced aftertaste of earthy/spicy hops and crystal malt.

Mouthfeel: Just below medium in body with average carbonation and a soft texture. The drinkability is good and only restrained by the perceived thickness from the malt.

Final Thoughts: Sometimes a seemingly average, one-dimensional style can blow you away. Castle Cream Ale is that beer. No frills, just sticking to the style and doing it justice. Would I drink it again? Yeah, I'm looking forward to trying more of their line-up now that they distribute to the cities.

I'm not a fan of Cream Ales, but this is a really good one. Smells like typical beer but stronger. Sweet, grainy and fruity malty core balanced by light spicy and floral hops. A hint of citrus. Creamy body with a mostly dry finish. A grainy aftertaste typical of Cream Ales hampers the drinkability for me a little.

L: bright amber with a light copper tint under a 2" mousse-like cream colored lacy cap with good retention.

S: malty with a hint of corn and light corn sweetness. Aromas are medium low and hop aromas are low.

T: malty, lightly sweet, medium low corn character, a trace of caramel, low hop flavors and medium low bitterness. The bitterness and malt have an almost tea like character.

F: medium to medium light and the carbonation is medium high.

O: This is a refreshing and easy to drink beer.

Poured from a 12 oz. can into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a deep amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big three finger off white head which settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A fairly light and sweet malt forward aroma with hints of cream and grains. Pale malt with hints of cereal grains, biscuit, cracker, and yeast. Sweet hints of cream and sugar. A nice simple cream ale aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a nice simple, light, and sweet malt forward taste with notes of cream and grains. Soft pale malt with notes of biscuit, cereal grains, cracker, and yeast. Sweet taste of cream and sugar. Not really any hops noticeable. A pretty solid creamy taste.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, crisp, and very smooth.

Overall: A pretty solid take on a Cream Ale. Nice soft malt presence and cream soda like flavor.

L - Light gold. pure white bubbly head about one inch high, minimal retention
S - lovely odor with hints of cream soda, sweet, bit of pale malt & grain smell
T - very nice almost cream-soda-esque reminiscent of spotted cow but even a bit sweeter. prefer my beers to have a little bit less sweetness unless they're wits or tripels - but i'll give this one the thumbs up. Done quite well for a cream ale!
F - creamy, smooth, medium - carbonation, nice finish
O - overall another great beer from castle danger - these guys are working to define minnesota's place in the world of craft beer and do it well with their flagship offerings.

Drank it from the can (not my preference) so I couldn't get a good look at it. Very smooth going down, on the sweet side. No bitterness to speak of. I usually like to mix my six packs for variety, but this one deserves a six-pack on it's own.

I had this beer at a Duluth bar, from a chilled can into a shaker pint. There just wasn't much flavor at all. Once the beer warmed a bit, it was much better. It's appropriately sweet, malty, and hoppy too. It's a nice beer, and just a little different from the crowd.

This is straight up cream soda in a beer can. Super easy drinking (ie. no hop bitterness, little to no residual sugars). F'ing delicious for the style

A little dark for a cream ale, but an excellent flavor! A little extra hops for the little extra kick.

Great smooth drinking beer. This beer is way better out of the tap than a can. Nice cream after taste
