A: Pours a clear dark amber color with a decent head that fades to bits of lacing.

S: Aroma of citrus and mild malt sweetness with a bit of grain.

T: Taste of citrus and mild malt sweetness. Mild bitterness and a clean finish.

F: Fairly light body, smooth but a bit shy on flavor.

O: Decent drinker, a non-offrnsive beer that is quite tame.

light tan head which eventually reduced to a ring and left traces of lacing. Aroma of pine, citrus, malt and caramel. Medium bitterness and sweetness. Medium body, sticky texture and a lingering, chewy, nutty, bitterness in the finish.

(Bottle)

A: Clear dark toffee colour, has a light cream coloured head which dissipated quickly leaving a thin film. A small amount of lacing as it was enjoyed.

S: Sweet toffee and coffee smell, sharp distinct odour.

T: Rich hoppy taste, with a dry bitter aftertaste. Hint of coffee but not nearly as strong as the smell indicated.

M: Really enjoyable on the palate.

O: Darker beers are more my thing, and this once was robust and delicious. Defninetely will have again.

Bottle: interesting 345mL brown bottle with a funky and unique 'Lark's Foot' label with a story on the back.

Appearance: pours a clear golden amber with hints of ruby. A thin white head with very little in the way of lacing. Looks okay.

Aroma: a pleasant and refreshing aroma of bread malts, with citric and floral hops. A good portent.

Taste: unfortunately drops off quite badly here - the hops are barely noticeable, with an almost cheap-tasting, flat grain dominating. Not impressive at all, top be honest.

Aftertaste: still somewhat refreshing, but just not a good enough tasting beer for the price.

Mouth feel: the mouth feel I think is half the problem here - it is too heavy with far too little carbonation. This really creates the lacklustre feel and taste.

Overall: a pretty darn ordinary beer from Sail & Anchor. Probably the worst of this series, certainly not worth anywhere near the AU$65 equivalent for a case of 24 x 330mL bottles. You could get much better beers for far cheaper than this.

345ml bottle. Best Before 06/08/2015. Medium / deep amber colour, generous beige head which eventually reduced to a ring and left traces of lacing. Aroma of pine, citrus, malt and caramel. Medium bitterness and sweetness. Medium body, sticky texture and a lingering, chewy, nutty, bitterness in the finish. I've had this before and didn't think it was much chop but was pleasantly surprised this time around. 8

Slightly dumb-bell shaped 345ml bottle purchased from Dan Murphy's in Alexandria. Yeast has been filtered out of the bottle. As has no doubt been stated before, this is Woolworths' in-house beer label.

Pours a very clear but truly amber colour, with an initially rather frothy head of pale beige. This settles to a faint but fine ring of white and a few islands of listless bubbles. Carbonation is fine, and there's a moderate weight to the body. Looks decent enough.

Nose is also relatively pleasant, although woefully empty of the purported Cascade and Chinook hops mentioned on the label. Instead there's a rounded malt character giving some grainy toast and a slight molasses sweetness. If anything hop-wise it has a slightly earthy, hedgerow sort of character to it—reminiscent more of English hops to me. It's really not bad.

Taste is more lacklustre, losing much of the apparent sweetness and becoming rather dry and flat as a result. Mild flat grain carries it forward with a slight zest of carbonation underneath. Slight cardboard and blackberry notes towards the finish with a touch of listless bitterness evanescing away to nothingness.

Feel is fine—the bubbles of carbonation are too prominent, but that's more an issue with the lack of flavour than anything else.

Overall, this isn't all that bad. That being said, it's certainly inferior to the much more ubiquitous (but similar) James Squire Nine Tales, so I don't know if it will get much of a foothold really competing in the same space. At least, I hope it doesn't.

Pours a deep amber color with no head whatsoever, even poured straight down the middle of the glass (I'm beginning to see a pattern here). Smells sweet, and faintly of roasted malt. No hop aroma that I can detect. There's actually some hop flavor, though. Not much, just enough to balance out the slightly sweet malty flavor. Mouthfeel is heavy and pretty much zero carbonation. Overall, it's slightly more adventurous than Sail and Anchor's Golden Ale, but still lacking in flavor.

From Dannos. No BB.

Gusher. Pours Amber, and for a second looks the biz. Then the head dies and it goes 100% clear. Little lace.

Aromas are muted, bready malts.

Taste is also dull and lifeless. Mild toffee malts in mid palate, but nothing after, save staleness.

Mouthfeel is OK... but rescuing a disaster.

S&A can - and need to - do better with these brews, that are chewing up mainstream store space and taking the craft beer movement back decades.

Pours deep amber with a small white head.
Nose shows soft vegetal notes, caramel and faint nutty notes. Pretty weak.
Pretty plain flavours. A bit of caramel and nutty malt but other than that just grainy malt.
Body feels watery.
Pretty boring stuff.

Number two in the free beer taste test: Boa's Bind Amber Ale. Let's see the Lark's Foot Golden Ale was average at best, however I'm crossing my fingers that the Amber Ale will be decent, after all it has six different malts AND Chinook and Cascade hops to boot!

Poured from a 345ml bottle into a nonic pint ("Old Nonni" as I like to call it).

A: Appears as a deep amber, bordering on rust, clear body with a light dusting of white coloured head.

S: Citrus grapefruit hops upfront with a malt biscuit base and a dash of herbaceous/peppery hops (like the aroma of Rocket) in the background.

T: The grapefruit flavoured hops hit first, more muted than expected from a craft brew, leading to a solid but unremarkable biscuit malt base and followed by a peppery note and a mild bitter finish. All in all lacking a little in the flavour department considering the amount of malts and quality of hops used, otherwise it's ok.

M: Mid to light body, light carbonation.

D: Not really competing in the Amber Ale market as this is more of an American Pale Ale in flavour profile, and taking this into account it is a better brew than the Lark's Foot Golden Ale, but a lessor brew than most other APA's, not even in the ball-park of a Sierra Nevada or Murray's Nirvana. Really lacks the kick-in-the-pants wallop of a good APA and this is starting to become a theme with the new Sail & Anchor brews.

Food match: A mild curry and rice, something like a beef massaman or a chicken tandoori with coconut and basmati rice respectively.

Im abit weary about this as i picked it up at Dan Murphys and if you believe the back spiel it states this was brewed with 6 different malts and cascade and chinook hops anyway it pours a light copper hue with a one finger head and a rim of lacing, the smell is abit weird definately lots of toffee malts along with sour cherries,a slight herbalness and a stale pub smell, the mouthfeel is light bodied with spritzy carbonation and if 6 malts were used i dont notice them, the taste is cherry candy, herbal hops, boiled candy, burnt toffee and finished with a herbal tea bitterness, overall this is definately abit different in a bad way and i dont think i believe the back label that much and wont buy again but better than Dry Dock thats for sure.
