A: This is one of those places "where everybody knows your name." Even though this place is very close to a college campus, you hardly ever see a large contingent of college students out just to get drunk.

Q: Small, family-run establishment that takes its place in the neighborhood seriously. Also, you can often enjoy great musical acts and attend charitable events at this place.

S: Many staffers have been around for a long time. They treat you well, especially if you are a regular.

S: Good selection of beers on tap with various styles represented. Tapped beer selection could be rotated a bit more frequently. Bottled beer selection is not the best in the area.

F: Wings are among the best in Allentown or the surrounding area - never soggy or fatty. The rest of the menu is rather basic, but almost everything is good.

V: Both food and beer prices are a bit high. It appears that owners use pricing to deter students from the nearby college - it seems to work.

I was in Allentown for business and decided to stop by Jack Callaghan's Ale House based on the limited reviews on BA. This is a little old dive bar in a decent section of Allentown. I stopped in around 5 and there were a handful of people in the bar. The bartender was very nice and immediately asked me if I would like something to drink. I browsed the tap selection and then asked for a bottle list. The tap selection and bottle list were mediocre at best. They have a few decent beers but I was so disappointed in the selection that I decided to leave. Also, there were no coolers in sight so if they do any take out business you are probably limited to BMC's. Even if the coolers were in a different room that I did not see they would have a limited selection based on the menu. I would not go out of my way to stop here again but if you are in the area there may not be many other choices.

I travel a lot for my job. I use BeerAdvocate regularly to determine where I stop and eat/drink for the night. Tonight I was in Allentown and at a loss for a place to go. Once again Beer Advocate comes to the rescue. I saw a rating of A+ for Callaghan's and had to check it out. So glad I did. Great food, selection, live music. Make this place a destination. I started with a local porter (Joe out of Philadelphia) and a Reuben (big and thick). Then I hit a chocolate porter (also very tasty). I like more than porter, but it IS almost winter. Again, check this place out.
