A: Black with a mocha head.

S: Anise, roasted malt, oak, dark chocolate and a touch of vanilla in the nose.

T: Dark chocolate, roasted malt quickly followed by a decent amount of vanilla and a bitter bit of alcohol followed by a finish of dark chocolate and dark roast coffee.

M: Full side of medium bodied and smoothish.

O: This beer was really good. It didn't have the strongest bourbon character, but it was there, and more importantly it tastes really good.

Appearance: raisin / dark brown in color. Nice thick frothy head that fades but stays throughout the whole drink

Nose: coffee & chocolate notes

Taste: bourbon, chocolate, a touch sweetness, also a touch of bitterness on the back end

Mouthfeel: coats the mouth, good legs on the glass with a swirl.

Overall: the barrel age helps this drink, not overly sweet like other bourbon barrel aged beers. Would possibly drink again.

Had on tap at Lucky Baldwins strong ale fest

This is easily the worst bourbon barrel offering I have had. The beer looked good black with a good amount of tan head and decent lacing. The smell was a mostly cocoa but no burbon flavors can be detected. The taste was almost nutmeg like no burbon or heat at all on this one. It was served a little too cold, which was better because as it warmed it tasted off almost a little sour. The body was very lite almost had a watered down feeling. I was very dissapointed with this one.

On tap at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach, CA.

Pours an opaque black with a khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, vanilla, wood, and bourbon. Taste is the same along with some cookie dough flavors and an alcohol kick with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good barrel aged stout and easily the best Lost Coast beer I have tried so far.

Enjoyed at Tops.

Scorched brown, with ruby highlights and a frothy, expansive cocoa-colored head that leaves thick film on the walls and on top of the liquid.

Very well-balanced, roasty nose. Medium-roast coffee, lots of milk chocolate, oats, toast, a little vanilla. Slightest hint of charred oak.

The flavor is equally smooth, though just a bit lighter. Oats and vanilla again, and there’s more vanilla here. Charred bread, a little dark chocolate. I only get the lightest hint of sweet bourbon.

A little thin in body. Light and watery, with smooth and fizzy carb. Not much heat, though. Lingering roasty bitterness.

This version of 8-Ball is tasty. Not a smack in the face, but a smooth drinking experience.

On tap at Strong Ale 2011.

A: Black. Toffee head of approximately 1.25 inches.

S: Cocoa and dark chocolate with oak, vanilla, and restrained bourbon. I get a touch of molasses and just a little brown sugar.

T: The flavor possesses a pervasive dark chocolate element with a moderate roasted grain presence. Oak is light and I get a lower medium earthy bitterness. Bourbon is not bold, but it does add some depth.

M: Full body with medium carbonation.

Overall: A nice beer on the whole.
