Had this on tap at the Holgate brewhouse. Definitely one of the better beers they had on offer.

A = Poured a dark orange, almost brown in appearance with a thin foam head that quickly dissapated.

S = Smelt of sweet malts that is almost honey like.

T = Sweet malts wiith an infusion of sweet honey. Little bitterness.

M = Lightly carbonated.

D = Could drink a few. But the high alcohol level will put some off after a few.

I had this at the Holgate Brewhouse in Woodend. I recommend stopping by if you ever find yourself in the area.
Double Trouble is their "Strong Malty Abbey-style Ale", and it pours a slightly cloudy amber colour with a good looking off-white head and nice lacing. The smell is sweet, malty, with a subtle scent of alcohol. The taste is malty sweet with a hint of toffee and really well hidden alcohol for its ABV. Mouthfeel is fairly thick and syrupy which hinders drinkability a little bit. I had it on tap, and the carbonation was pretty low. I think if they kicked up the bubbles a little bit it might improve drinkability slightly. All in all, an impressive strong ale.

a: clear copper color (almost ruby reddish), very little head ever forms & ends with thin ring around edges, some carbonation & lacing
s: malty aroma with raisin sweetness
t: malty all around that finishes with slight bitterness (coriander) and warm alcohol
m: light to medium body, not enough carbonation
d: not a bad attempt at a belgian, but needs a little work to round out the flavor & mouthfeel

Drank fro my St Bernardus Chalice

A - Pours a slightly cloudydark amber colour with an nice creamy ivory coloured head that retains well.

S - Slighlty chocolate brown sugar from the bottle. Once poured the malts come through.

T - Almost barley wine like flavours of burnt caramel, chocolate and a boozey finish. Quite a nice creamt flavour.

M - Medium body and minimal carbonation

D - I'm unsure as to exactly what type of Belgian Abbey Ale this is supposed to be. It really is not in the Belgian style at all but does represent a fine ale in it's own right.

I left in the wine fridge for a year before consumption, that may explain the serious mark up compared with other reviews

I have cellared this for about 3 years. Really been looking forward to seeing how it's developed.

Firstly pours a lovely, clear amber. Lots of fizzing as expected for a beer that's been cellared.. But, there is still a bit of a head, which sinks to a thin foam. Plenty of bubbles. There's some suspended particles still in the bottle. I'll tip them out in the second glass, turning it cloudy, of course.

Aroma of molasses, musty malt. Some fruitcake (citrus rind, raisins, dates), touch of amontillado nuttiness. Some burnt toffee also.

Perfumey flavours of licorice, musk, pepper, nutmeg. A complex hint of wooden cigar box. Very light hop flavour. A rounding sweet finish not too dissimilar to a Pedro Ximinez..

Nice creamy mouthfeel. Touch of alcohol warmth, and a slight bitterness finishing it off.

I find that age tends to diminish hop profile, while adding oxidised components to the maltiness, for good or for bad.

In this case, the oxidative notes (sherry nuttiness) really round the beer out. This is a lovely fire side ale.

The label refers to this as a dubbel.

a: This was a clear, ruby tinted mahogany color. A hard pour yielded a thin fizzy head that quicly faded.

s: Raisins, flowers, and brown sugar are backed up by a healthy dose of heat that reminded me of rum.

t: Starts off lightly sweet with mild toffee and raisin flavors. The toffee then takes over, leading to a dry, hot, perfumed finish.

m: Feels watery and under carbonated.

d: Some extra carbonation would have a gone a long way with this one. Too hot and dry overall, at the finish in particular. The exhale was almost solventy. Not far from being a pretty good beer though.

A - Medium sized head that quickly falls to a thin whisper. Mahogony coloured. Leaves quite a heavy lacing.
S - Malty, caramel goodness. Some hints of dark fruits like raisins.
T - More malty caramel in the taste, a bit of spicyness.
M - Medium mouthfeel and carbonation.
D - Not an everyday, polish of a sixer beer but very drinkable.

Thanks to triple5 for this one. Shared with my wife with our supper, cabbage noodles.

Poured from a 330ml. bottle ,best before 04/03/10.

Appearance: Pours a leather brown body with virtually no head. When held to the light, the body becomes lit with ruby red.

Smell: Brown sugar, boozy, dark fruit and whiskey.

Taste: Dark cherry minus the tartness, leather and candied sugar. Some liquor notes but not as present as in the aroma.

Mouthfeel: Surprisingly not heavy though the feel is fleeting. As it warms, it prolongs its presence and make it feel smooth. Still a bit weak in the body.

Drinkability: Alcohol heat isn't too bad though i find it not great enough to get it again.

Overall: Not really a great representation of a Belgian ale. It's all right but nothing great.

330ml bottle, which even calls this a 'Dubbel' styled beer. What actually awaits me here?

This beer pours a slightly hazy medium brickish amber colour, with one finger of dense foamy tan head, which leaves a decent array of thinly painted shoreline lace around the glass as it quickly settles.

It smells of dark, muddled black fruit - I can almost parse out some boozy raisins and fleshy dates - a middling caramel/toffee maltiness, thin brown sugar, a bit of weirdly creamy breadiness, and soft, innocuously spicy hops. The taste is big caramel/treacle/toffee malt, a redux of the juicy, lightly sauced dark raisin fruitiness, a subtle milk chocolate essence, demarara-like sugar, and more spicy, earthy hops. The 8% alcohol is well hidden and/or integrated.

The carbonation is able, emboldened, and yet smart enough to just do its job, the body a hefty medium weight, affected by a strange, tame airiness, though still genuinely smooth overall. It finishes off-dry, the fruity, caramelized malt not overly flaunting it, though they sure as hell still got it.

A pretty decent Belgian-style Dubbel (time to reflect that here on BA), the malt and fruit characters playing quite nice together, and all else keeping it down, but not out, so as to provide a semblance of balance. Not actually as supple as the best old world instances, but still a hearty example of what is possible in the brave (not so) new world.

Copper pour with small dissipating head.
Aroma shows cinnamon, caramel, some plums, vanilla, dark chocolate and figs. Very rich, very appetising.
Flavour contains masses of dark sugar and treacle, almost overwhelming in its sweetness. A fair bit of alcohol is also noticeable.
No where near enough carbonation is present to cut through the sweetness.

Fairly clear red colour with a short lasted, creamy light tan head. I'm looking for just a touch more head retention here.

Bready, nutty and very malt aroma. I don't really get the characteristic fruity, spicy aroma. Interesting.

Is this supposed to be a Belgian or a Doppelbock? I get lots of bready malt with a touch of fruit but that's it and it falls a little flat for a Belgian.

The medium-full body and moderate carbonation are fine.

A reasonable beer but as a Belgian it doesn't succeed.

This pours a clear a mahogany red with a minimal beige head that leaves some nice lacing.

The nose is mostly malt - caramel and for some reason a bit of chocolate. Some yeasty spiciness in there too.

The spiciness comes through more strongly on the palate. I get some sweetness too.

Medium to full bodied. No sign of that 8%.

A good solid Belgian style.

330 ML bottle Poured into a Tulip

A-- A dark brown with tints of red through the pour and in the glass. A light brown head that was one finger and slowly disappearing but leaving a foamy lacing.

S-- Very faint smell of dark fruits and raisin. Very muted and disappointing.

T-- Very sweet. Once again dark fruit, raisin, coffee, a sort of rum like taste and a touch of cognac. More of an alcohol taste that is very sweet.

M-- I think the reviews saying it is under carbonated are still true. Just really sweet and a very alcohol taste and feel. Near undrinkable.

D-- Feels and tastes bigger than what it is at 8%. Over powering in alcohol taste and feel. Would be better with natural fermentation or cellaring a long time to let the sugar mature. I like what I have had from Holgate so far but this is just not very good.

Pours clear red/brown with a non existent head. Nose is very expressive with dark fruit notes and significant spice, surely some extra fermentables in there, reminds me of the christmas ale funnily enough. Palate has low/medium carbonation again with the rich caramel malt, dark fruit (raisins, prunes) & spice notes. Palate translates well. Finishes with lingering sweetness & spice. Abv pops up a touch but none moreso than the style requires. Would have liked it to be bottle conditioned but nonetheless a really good attempt at a belgian dark.

Bottle at Beer Deluxe. From notes.

A - Poured a cloudy dark orange with two fingers of light brown head. Spats of lace with a film of retention.

S - Raisins, brown sugar, dark fruits, bread. Pretty nice.

T - Raisin and lot's of sugar. Some hops and caramel/toffee.

M - Medium carbonation, medium to full body with sweet finish.

O/D - Almost cloying, too sweet but an alright interpretation.

Pours a dark copper hue which leeaves a two finger head and sporadic clingy lacing,the smell is brandy,caramel,toffee,butterscotch and boozy alcohol,the mouthfeel is full bodied and warming with tastes of strong butterscotch,marzipan,caramel,raisins and finished with sweet honey and a touch of boozy warming alcohol and overall its nice for a brisk night like tonight and would pair well with a sweet dessert cheers.

Truck loads better in this sitting. No head at all and the colour is hardly inspiring (rusty light brown with a tinge of red, copper perhaps). The standard Belgian aromas remain (heavy, cooked, sugary malts) but the palate is really quite dry and is driven by super classy hops. Very tight for the style and hides the abv with absolute ease. More please!

S: Aroma of dark fruit, some roasted, bit of caramel sweetness and spices.

T: Taste of dark fruit some caramel sweetness with a bit of spice in the background. Mild bitterness and a clean finish.

F: Moderate body, smooth with just a hint of the 8.0% ABV.

O: Enjoyable sipper to relax with. Has a warming feeling that takes the edge off a cold evening

Brought over from Australia

Appearance: light brown/amber; clear; nice, fine head, looks like it's going to be a creamy one

Aroma: raisin, dates; malt is caramel but with something interesting - fruity and spiced

Taste & Mouthfeel: rich toffee flavour, like a candy and same smooth texture as well; there's some kick to it, partly from alcohol, but almost like bourbon due to the vanilla and spice notes; after reading the label it all comes together - it's actually a dark rum flavour, knew it was familiar but couldn't put my finger on it; balanced enough that the finish isn't cloying, but is slightly dry; still getting raisins too

Overall: a full bodied, full flavoured ale that will warm you up quickly; might be too sweet for some, but it's great for the right occasion, ie fall, winter
