It was Ok i suppose, not much life in it though, a bit flat tasting, slightly spicy, a bit sticky, a tad refreshing, not that intersting, i'll have to try it again though, i was perhaps not really in the mood to drink beer while sampling this one, it just seems a bit tame and a bit sticky aswell, it was probably better than my rating would suggest.

Hazy straw pour. Small but persistent dense head.
Expected wheat aroma with a lot of citrus, mainly lemon. Quite sweet, almost artificial. Noticeable coriander, but there's also a vegetal aspect to it.
Very similar flavours, with sweet wheat and coriander, followed by hints of orange and a pleasant light bitterness.
Good light body, but could have used a bit more carbonation.

Bottled on 25/11 drinking on 9/12. Gotta love fresh beer, especially for this style.

Pale golden yellow, low carbonation. Slightest cloudiness. This whitehead.

Nice aroma. Basically a thinned out hefe. Muted banana and clove. Light yeast. Very thin sediment in the bottle. Not sure if this is lightly filtered or they let the heavy stuff settle before bottling.

Delicately balanced flavor. Little hop bitterness but enough presence from the yeast, wheat and malt to keep this as interesting as it should be for the style.

A little heavy on the palate as it warms but drink it cold and you will be rewarded. A very nice beer from Holgate. Well done.

A hazy, white wheat (I'm guessing) in the style of Hoegarden. Straw-like in colour with a crisp white head that settles down fairly quickly. The smell is crisp, clean and citrusy (is that a word)? The taste of orange is clearly evident in the taste and is dominant over the malt. An easy drinking beer that would be great in the summer. I'm not the biggest fan of this style of beer, but it's a good version at the style.

I am sampling this beer at room temp in a small tumbler glass. Not really appropriate glassware, but I am in a hotel and this is what ive got.
The beer pours a hazy gold color with some floaties. The .5cm bleached white head foams up and fades rather quickly to an edge layer. Aroma is citrusy sweet with oranges dominant mixing with coriander and lemon and some biscuity yeast hints.
First sip reveals a lite body and very fine spacious carbonation. Flavor is sweet and citrusy with orange and coriander again. Overall fairly mild taste with just a hint of crisp lemon on the finish. This is a very drinkable beer and was quite tasty after a day of snorkelling on Great Barrier Reef.

5 January 2006

Clear pale yellow colour with a small head. Zesty lemony citrus aroma. Tastes of light wheaty grain but with an emphasis on sourish citrus fruit. Some coriander evident but it mostly resembled a lemon/lime soft drink. Light bodied with medium carbonation. Didn't think too much of this one.

On tap at the Holgate Brewhouse.

A: Served a hazy straw color with a moderate head that fades to bits of lacing.

S: Aroma of fruit, especially banana with some citrus. taste of citrus, some banana and malt sweetness. Mild bitterness and a clean finish.

T: Light body, crisp and refreshing.

O: Nice beer, nothing fancy but goes down easy.

Very pale gold, dark straw colour, with a white foam that fades to a thin cover of fine bubbles. Light haze.
Wheaty aroma, some subtle ginger notes, citrus. Light touch of toffee even.
Flavour a bit too sour for my liking. There is a bit of a cloying wheaty finish, but some more upfront malt would better balance the acid. Coriander seed is distinct.
More bitter than, say, Hoe-ey. Although these attributes are appropriate for style, it seems all elbows.... some sharp points that could be rounded off somewhat, and mellowed out with a bit more sweetness.

Had this on tap at the Holgate brew house.

A = Poured a cloudy white. Just like most beers in this category but yet not as white.

S = Smells of citric orange and herbs.

T = Citric orange dominates followed by a slight cloviness and mild bitterness.

M = Lightly carbonated.

D = Good beer, but would rather drink other beers.

From notes

Pours pale straw, white head does not last... Hmm... Aussie trend on wits sadly

More spice on nose than anything else

Taste is mild and a bit stale up front. More doughy malts than spritz and zing. Hint of lemon, usual banana , but quite sweet overall. Too sweet. Improves as goes down, evens out.

Almost over carbonated zesty small bubbles. Burp fodder.

Sad, Aussie brewers really having trouble with this style...IMHO recently with beers I have tried. Not bad, but...

Seems to be a decent improvement on prior tastings. Very light in the mouth but exactly what I needed in a lawn mower beer (yep I was mowing all day). Soft lemon juice and light pepper and spice. Such a light touch but perfect for summer. Big points for structure.

A - Quite hazy straw colour. Pours a small head for a witbier that quickly reduces to barely anything.
S - Wheat maltiness with slight spice notes.
T - A slight sour taste, very light citrus flavours.
M - Very light mouthfeel with a light zesty bitterness hitting the back on the tongue.
D - This is drinkable but personally I'd like to see some more citrus flavours coming through.

Appearance - 4.0
Pours clear straw before I agitated the yeast, resulting in the classic witbier image of foamy white head over a cloudy, pale beige to orange body.

Smell - 3.0
The expected witbier notes are there: slight banana, citrus peel/zest, a little clove and coriander. Unfortunately this is somewhat spoiled by an unpleasant soapy aroma.

Taste - 3.0
Soft wheat malt background with a little citrus peel, clove and coriander. Just a hint of candy cane sweetness and a touch soap - not uncommon for the style. Quite tart (even sour?) and refreshing.

Mouthfeel - 3.5
Relatively fine and lively carbonation, light to medium body.

Drinkability - 3.5
Would be better appreciated in summer. An easy drinker, but not memorable.

A fairly average, inoffensive witbier. I'm sure I would have enjoyed in more (and perhaps scored it higher) if the weather were warmer.
