I've been to Los Caballitos twice now, and never really thought that I got what I paid for. The food was OK, but just that, "OK". Mexican is not that hard to do, so it should at least be very good. Especially when there are so many excellent Mexican places opening near the Italian Market. Additionally, the service sucked. I had my kids with me one early Saturday and we were almost completely ignored. The beer selection, I thought, was average, and I certainly wouldn't call it a "beer bar" as almost everyplace has a line-up of craft brews these days. Don't waste your time... there are better Mexican places, and better beer bars, all within close proximity.

Los Caballitos is the only perpetually busy jawn in Passyunk. It doesn't matter if it's a Saturday night or a Monday morning, you know that Los Caballitos is going to have a crowd going on.

I wanted to stop by for the mezcal (one of the few places in Philly that carries it) and was surprised to find the bar is listed here on BA.

The wife and I visited on a Sunday evening. While Passyunk was suffering from the Sunday-night sluggish symptom, Los Caballitos was packed and hopping. We sat outside and had fine service, considering how dementedly busy they are.

The five-dollar margaritas are not bad, and the mezcal selection is very good. But the beer? They have 8 taps: Dos Equis, Allagash White, Founders Centennial, Corona Light, Neshaminy Pils , Breckenridge Summer, Lancaster Helles Lager, Southampton Summer. 9 bottles and and 6 cans to boot, but only Dogfish Festina as a craft option among all of them.

I really enjoyed the food. They have lots of veggie/vegan options, and great "cremas" (smoked corn, smoked poblano). My "seitan anticuchos (skewers)" were top-notch.

Los Caballitos ain't cheap, and it sure is not a beer jawn. But for anything else, I approve.
