Pours a rich caramel/raisin brown with mahogany reddish tint. Good finger or so of fine light tan head. Good retention. Decent lacing.

Nose is toasty and sweet with some boozy raisins, green tobacco, some sweet potato pie (?) emerges as it warms. Huh.

Flavour leans more into the tobacco and leather side of those flavours, which I dig out of an old ale. Spicy and still way hot at two and a half years in the 'cellar.'

Sharp carbonation reinforces the alcohol heat that's still very strong. Finish moves through some nice elements of raisin and fig and tobacco before being subsumed by an alcohol finish that always reminds me of sour mash whiskey and is more than I really wanted out of this bottle.
There's a lot to like in here, and if you are into big boozy hot old ales the negatives I found probably won't bug you so much. Who knows if more time would mellow it some, but as it is there's a good brew in here that's a little overwhelmed by its own alcohol.

March 20th, 2015 - Enjoyed out of a plastic hotel cup at the top of classy and fine dining, the Madness Old Stock Ale is a beautiful brew, with a tiger's eye color in the color and a lustrous cinnamon-tan head. Heavy cherries pound the nose on the aroma, accompanied with dark raisin, Fuji apple and lusciously ripe strawberries. The malt bill is in the background, but the overall impression of the scent is chocolate covered fruit. The flavor is heavy with the chocolate up front with some bourbon and heavy honey notes, and a long glowing aftertaste reminiscent of alcohol and cough medicine. In that, the aftertaste doesn't live up to the quality of the rest of the brew, but generally this is a good drink.

On-tap 6/21/2016 at Flynn’s in Mansfield, MA, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep brown color, with a large foamy off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains brown sugar, caramelized malts, some fruit and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel, brown sugar and fruit. Then hearty malt character comes in. The hops presence is mild but complementary and provides a good balance. The after-taste is sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down dangerously easy, not too filling, very strong kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer to sip on for a while.

From the growler, it pours brown with a tan head. I detect alcohol on the nose, along with malt and some fruit scent. Taste follows nose, with the alcohol relaxing the tongue which then enjoys the malt. Dangerous!

Bottle:
Pours a dark brown, looks like it could be cloudy but can't tell due to darkness. Head is a light rusty tan, and lasts nice and creamy through most of the pour. Lacing is nice as well.

Nose is pretty fitting for the style. Little sugary dark fruit, roots, sasparilla, maybe a little squash-like tart note (think real pumpkin ale). Another sniff detects some plum like notes.

Taste has the root/cola like backbone that also shows up front. Not overly sweet, but definitely a malty brew. There is almost a wood-like bitterness that comes t me mid taste and grows throughout. A little alcohol heat early does fade. Raw root-like notes in the end in place of pure bitterness.

Medium warmth worked best for me with this beer. Little hot cold, tending towards bland (kind of a build up in the end taste) as it gets warm. I will say I don't recall the little falloff in my initial attempt of this beer when I didn't review. Think it's a no-brainer I will need a revisit.

Look is mahogany deep Amber with a thin to little to no head.

Aroma is lots of dark fruits and rich berries. Fills your noise right away. Smells a little astringent alcohol note.

Taste is malty caramel with lots of rich berries. Almost like a dried fruit strip.

Excellent.
