Pour: Tall boy can into a nonic pint glass. Appearance: Light straw to light gold in color. Hazy with lazy bubbles rising to the top. Big thick white head that lasts. Lots of lacing present on the sides of the glass. Aroma: had to sniff deep for any type of aroma. Smells of malty bready at first and then it reveals some citrus hops. Not much on the nose. Taste: Hop and juicy citrus but not a hop bomb. More subdued and somewhat balanced than other DIIPA's. Tropical and mango like hop profile. Aftertaste: Juicy hops recede to reveal more of the malt profile detected on the nose. Smooth and balanced throughout. Alcohol heat shows up on the back end as well. Notes: Really excellent looking brew. Nice head retention and lacing. The aroma underwhelms for the style. The taste is balanced and smooth yet somewhat underwhelming. Result/ Rating: Good. 3.7 out of 5.

A-a clear light golden yellow with two fingers worth of rocky head

S-light bready malt, citrus, light tropical fruits, and some light pine in the finish

T-taste is similar to the smell with a pale malty backbone, citrus, tropical fruits, and a large piney finish

M-medium body, could do with a little more carbonation

Overall could use a little more carbonation to make this into a real contender, but has a nice amount of hops and tropical fruits to give a good balance

Look: A deep, hazy golden-orange appearance with a massive white foam head. The retention and lacing are great throughout.

Aroma: Pineapple, orange, and other citrus towards the front. Earthy hops (pine) towards the back.

Taste: Great malty backbone and juicy, bitter hops. Citrus and floral notes at the end.

Feel: Medium carbonation with bitterness running from start to finish of every sip. Really well balanced, a satisfying DIPA that has established itself as one of my local favorites.

Got a fresh growler of this DIPA at the Three Stars Brewing Co. facility in Takoma, Washington, DC, 1.24.15.

Appearance: burnt orange, nearly amber color and an off white and tightly bubbled head with very good retention

Smell: Sweet candied orange, grapefruit rind, apricot/peach; alcohol is more noticeable than other beers of its breed, but it's not too in the way. It lends a clove-like spiciness.

Taste: Huge bitter grapefruit in the foretaste collides with a sweet candied orange flavor (that was hinted at in the nose) in the middle palate, which ends up being the dominant flavor. Resinous throughout, until the bone dry finish. Leans very dry and piney in the finish; the bitterness of the finish is actually quite intense, and by the end of a full glass, your palate has been crushed. I'm not fully on board with the aftertaste, which I find to have a slightly strange acidic quality. That said, this is a very good tasting beer on the whole.

Mouthfeel: Feel is slightly sticky until you hit a wall of refreshing dryness in the finish. Appropriate medium carbonation and body.

Overall, this is a very solid double IPA from the folks at Three Stars. It's intensely bitter and sports an orange-centric hop flavor profile that departs from the norm.
