Recently refurbished, now run by the ex-chef from the pub next door, the Brunswick. Usually features a couple of beers from the Castle Rock portfolio alongside up to half-a-dozen guests. Some continental lager. Few bottles. New landlord also runs Derby CAMRA winter beer fest, so here's hoping he's given the chance to pick up some interesting guests. The Alex had been through a number of hands since its heyday under Mark Robins; here's hoping for more stability and better beer range in the future.

As usual, I can only echo LongBeachBum's opinion of the Alexander Hotel. An essential visit - together with the Brunswick next door - when in Derby. Both are only 5 minutes walk from Derby Main Railway Station. Come out of the Station, turn right and follow the main road alongside the old Railway workers cottages and past the Brunswick. One main room with L shaped bar, always good selection of beers on hand pull, and a large selection of bottle imported beers from Europe, so plenty of choice!
Good service, and can be busy at lunchtimes, especially if a Beer Festival on in Derby. Interior is 'basic' but good atmosphere and always a good time had by all!

A pubcrawl in Derby, one of England’s premier drinking areas outside of London, is simply not complete without a visit to the "Alex", which is usually done straight after a trip to the Brunswick Inn which is almost next door. Competition between the two of these most highly respected Ale Houses in Derby means great selection, and quality, for visitors.

Derby has massive historical links with the railways, and the Alex (which is situated no more than 5 minutes walk from the Railway Station, just turn right on exit and head up the road that runs parallel with the tracks, the Alex is on your left) has lots of railway memorabilia adorning its walls reflecting this.

Once a Bateman’s house, it is now a Tynemill establishment. Serves a great selection of cask-conditioned real ales; high turnover and excellent cellarmanship always ensures the highest condition. Handpulled regular beers usually include Bateman’s XB, Draught Bass, Hook Norton Best Bitter and Timothy Taylor’s Landlord. These are usually complimented by several Guest Beers; listed details for these are always on the chalkboard near the bar. It also sells Foreign/Continental Beers, a traditional draft English Cider, Country Fruit Wines and has a good selection of Single Malt Whiskies. Pub Meals represent excellent value for money, as indeed does the accommodation if you want to stay the night! There is a small outside drinking area that is very pleasant on warm afternoons.

Often populated by traveling CAMRA members and Real Ale fans from all over the UK. A favorite of mine for many years, and a real champion of beers from the smaller independent micro-breweries. A very friendly Pub with sharp, courteous service. One of Derby’s premier Ale Houses.

A frequent CAMRA Award winner. A MUST.
