This strong Belgian-style ale is brewed with Pilsner malt and a touch of oats, providing a slightly sweet malty profile balanced by a judicious amount of whole cone noble Hallertau hops. Our tripel is characterized by complex yet mildly spicy character from the compliment of traditional spices. Named after Dave Logsdon's triplet daughters, the label features Oregon's "Three Sisters" mountain range.

750ml bottle at share courtesy of Buckeyeboy. Pale golden pour, light cloudiness, airy head. Lighter saison in body, but very full in flavor. Nice floral, herbal notes.

Because Logsdon is one of the more successful brewers to cross-breed the saison with Brett, I suppose they are in a good position to interpret the tripel. I find Straffe Drieling more traditionally yeast-driven... particularly so as I get to the bottle's bottom.
It starts as a good-Looker, an active yeast swirling lots of malted protein. Its nose attack is well-spiced, mostly with hops. The promised refreshment of the hops blends nicely with a fruit punch of apples and pears and peach. I also detect a nice pepper, subtle like it should be in this style. But, its bottom-line is balanced and shows that in its semi-dry finish.
this is only my second from Logsdon, so I'm not pretending to offer an expert review. But after only five minutes on their website, I can see their dedication and why they have earned such a good reputation among aficionados. I hope to have more of their offerings.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a red wine glass.
L - Hazy; straw colored. Fluffy white head and strong lacing.
S - Aroma is floral and earthy, similar to lavender, although I don't think that is exactly it. Behind that is some grain and a touch of barnyard funk.
T - Flavors of cracked grain and black pepper. Mid-palate some earthy and lightly floral hops come through, which then blend into a low floral/spice note from a spice addition or possibly the yeast. Slightly sweet finish.
F - Medium to light body with a moderate, crisp carbonation. Moderate hops bitterness feels fresh. Light alcohol presence.
O - A great farmhouse beer with subtle spices and bright aromas and flavors.

Logsdon Farmhouse Ales "Straffe Drieling"
750 ml brown glass bottle, simply capped. "Bottle No. 17076 Best By: 12/2019"
$12.99 @ Wegmans, North Wales, PA
Notes via stream of consciousness: It's poured a very hazy golden-orange body beneath a two inch head of rocky looking white foam. Plenty of tiny bubbles can be seen rising from below, adding to the head, and keeping it from falling. The aroma is yeasty, slightly sweet and doughy, grainy, fruity, softly spicy, mildly funky, herbal, and subtly floral. I can't pick out any specific fruits but I'd say it falls under "orchard" fruits. On to the flavor... there's more clear fruitiness here and I'm finding apple, peach, apricot, soft pear, and a suggestion of black cherry. There seems to be some mild banana and soft citrus in there as well. I'm not getting a lot of spice though. It seems like there's some coriander to it, and just a light touch of peppery character but they're both mild. Good, that's the way I like it! The malt isn't too sweet, and doesn't overstep or step back from the yeasty fruitiness and spice - it's perfectly balanced in that way, and I guess with the bitterness as well, which is in the median range at around 40-45 IBUs. There's a touch of acidity to it that helps to balance it, as does the bite of effervescent carbonation, and it finishes dry despite the fact that there is some residual malt lingering along with the fruit and spice and grassy and herbal notes. Wow, I'm pretty impressed by this. It's quite complex and yet it all combines really well, AND it's superbly balanced. In the mouth it's medium bodied with a dextrinous side and an effervescent fine-bubbled carbonation that warms to become airy giving it a fuller feel. At this point I'm getting some notes of vanilla as well, and I wonder if it's aged in oak. Some comes out in the long, dry, mainly herbal finish once everything else has passed. As for the head retention and lacing, it turns out that both are quite good. I have large patches of solid, fairly thick lacing as well as some more spotted areas. Overall I have to say that this is an exceptional Belgian-style tripel that's well worth seeking out.

Straw filtered with 5 whopping fingers of white head, and little carbonation. Gets real cloudy when you get to the yeast at the bottom of the bottle.
Smells of Belgian phenols, and lemon juice. Hints of canned peaches as well.
Tastes of tart peaches, Belgian phenols, really sour and sweet like fresh peaches.
Light body with low carbonation.
Excellent tasting brew. Drinking in Redding, Feb 11, 2019.

750 mL bottle to tulip glass
A: Classic copper-tan ale appearance, its temporarily frothy head quickly dissipates. Little lacing to speak of.
S: Fruity, yeasty bouquet, classic tripel aromas. Cherry, berry notes play off a grassy funk.
T: Those grassy notes shoot to the front of the palate. Cherry-like esters, honeyed malts, a touch of coriander make up the back-end of the flavors. Long, sweet finish, with a touch of metallic phenols lingering.
M: Medium bodied, lightly carbonated for the style.
There seems to be a debate on the style of this brew - flavors straddle between a tripel and a saison. But the brewers called it a farmhouse tripel, so I don't thing there was any deceptive advertising here. Let's just call it a dry, funky tripel.

Too much citrus and sour for a good tripel

This is more of a saison than a tripel. A good saison though. I’d rate it higher if the style was correctly labeled.
