Deep hazy and veiled brown color with a bright copper hue but no visible activity. Light creamy light brown 2 finger head, lasting around 5-10 minutes, lacing is average but the swirl is decent. Flavors of prunes, raisins, liquorice, toffee, brown sugar, roasted grains dominant barley, and herbal hops. Slick and soft silky medium body with a light crisp. Strong finish yet not too excessive on the tongue coat, densely sugary and fruity, a hint of clove and soapy cheese effect. Pure barley sugar smell, quite inviting. Though the body gets a bit dull very fast as it warms. Rich intense caramel sweetness, too much but lots of spices kicks in so the balance is not too much affected, still makes a decent appetizer. Overall very good quality craft.

Nice barleywine with a big ester presence alongside the caramel. The sweetness balances the bitterness but doesn't manage to minimize the booziness. Some aging might do some good stuff to this beer

Barley wine is an acquired taste, but the aggressiveness of the caramel and plum flavours really come on very strong. Not an easy drink at all.

A: A nice dark copper color, rigorous pour produces a thin white head.

S: Candied sugar and fruit peel, apple and pear.

T: Strong brown sugar flavor up front. Very sweet, a little clove-like spice. Mostly just sweet, ending in sugary pear juice.

M: Higher carbonation than usual for the style, relatively thick however.

O: Not a bad English barleywine, although one dimensional. Better than the overall ratings would suggest.

Notes: Fresh bread dough, bread crust, port, raisins, red candied fruits, cherry, cola, semi-sweet chocolate, medium roasted coffee, toffee, brown sugar, big bold malty nose with a good complexity as it warms up. Light earthy, herbal hop bitterness. Temperature is key for this beer. Don't drink this cold or you'll miss out. An awesome, rich, big sirupy and satisfying beer perfect for dessert. A big sipper that could be pair with a nice cigar or dark chocolate.

341 ml brown glass bottle, notched "14"
$3.49 Canadian @ Metro Plus, Quebec, QC on 4 Octobre 2014

Notes: Hazy deep russet/light mahogany brown body beneath a creamy, yellowed off-white head that drops quickly leaving behind only limited spotty lace. The alcohol is clear in the aroma. Caramel malt dominates, livened by fruitiness which includes raisin, plum, dried apricot, and apple. Moderate bitterness. No real hop presence, as expected. Quite pleasant except for the alcohol which really doesn't need to be so obvious at just 10.5% abv.

Poured from fridge temp. Pours a nice murky brown with quickly dissipating tan head. I am very familiar with Thomas Hardy's Ale, so I'm pumped to try this one. Nose is phenomenal - figs, toffee, malts, werther's, maple, brown sugar, and syrup. The smell is really inviting. Taste follows the nose. Definitely some hop bitterness up front, which would likely disappear with age. Rich syrupy caramel, maple, dark cherries, figs, bread, and nuts. The bitterness is not my favorite aspect of the beer, but it's not overwhelming. Mouthfeel is thick and syrupy. Overall, a fantastic barley wine from the English style.

341ml Bottle from Marche Omni QC for $4

Appearance – Murky brown colour with an average size fizzy beige coloured head. It’s hard to make out the carbonation level due to the darkness of the beer and there is some okay lacing. The head lasted for 3-4 minutes before it was gone.

Smell – Malts, dark fruits, anise, leather

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, caramel, and hops. There is also some dates/raisins, anise, and some earthy notes.

Overall – Pretty solid stuff, reminds me a bit of the Dieu Du Ciel Solstice dHiver. I'll buy this one again if I see it in 6 packs.

Appearance: It has a nice deep reddish/brown color to it. It has a nice beige head that dies down moderately and leaves little lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of dark fruit (grapes, raisins), sweet caramel, toffee and definite sugar.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a strong dark fruit sweetness, sweet caramel/toffee and some grassy hops giving it a nice counterbalancing bitterness.

Mouthfeel: It has a low/medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.

Picked this one up at Peluso in Montreal. From notes.

A - Poured cloudy deep red with good carbonation and a half finger of off white head that went really fast. No lace and no retention.

S - Sugar, dark fruits. Quite sugary.

T - Big boozy fruits, caramel, sugar. The flavour in the finish is a little off or maybe just too sugary. Not bad.

M - Good carbonation, medium body, sweet finish.

O/D - Not a bad barleywine. Less complex than I wanted. The flavour was alright, but nothing I would revisit most likely.
