Atmosphere: Big warehouse style store, high ceilings, lots of space between aisles, nothing is cramped in here
Quality: Everything is good quality here, whats more to say about a liquor store?
Service: Staff is knowledgeable and friendly, but not crawling all over the place
Selection: Very good, but not as good as other Joe Canal's or some other area stores. Much much better than the average store
Value: Everything is priced competitively when comparing to other stores
Overall: Excellent place to go, but they're more focused on wine and spirits, with beer stuck in the back. Still excellent selection of beer, but if you've been in other Joe Canal's, you know what it could be. Still, you can find HTFs and breweries that don't have big distribution footprints.

So I'm heading down to Ocean County, visiting my Mom for the weekend. She knows I'm a beer addict, excuse me, advocate, and mentions that a Joe Canal's recently opened in Brick. Not spitting distance, but certainly driving distance from her house. Worthy of a slight detour...
I check the Googles, and see that the place is located on Rte 70, a mile and a half east off Exit 88 of the Garden State Parkway. Typically awkward New Jersey U-turn aside, it's easy to get to.
Walking in, it's a moderately big warehouse. Aisles and aisles of wine and spirits. The beer, however, was not nearly as evident. Turns out there's a separate room in the back dedicated to our favorite beverage. Just wish it was more clearly delineated, and that I didn't have to ask a staff member, "So...where's the beer?"
But yeah, there's beer. A nice amount in fact. Coolers along the left wall, room temperature stuff across the way. The selection? Excellent for the area, and by comparison, to many places. Not top notch by our admittedly high standards, but still good. Don't expect to find rarities though, or a lot of foreign beer. Mainly a lot of American craft and micros, including a lot of NJ locals and regionals.
I was asked if I needed help by a couple of the Joe Canalsians, and I eventually ended up discussing beer with one of them. Jeff (Geoff?) was young but knew his stuff, and was helpful when I asked for advice. The rest of the staff didn't go out of the way to assist, but were friendly and informative when needed. Solid service.
Time running short, I was pleased to find Sierra Nevada's Ruthless Rye IPA, and I also snagged some Mendocino Imperial Barleywine, two beers I hadn't seen or tried before. But I had a lot of other options as well...
Okay Mom, I'm hitting the road, sorry I'm late. Joe Canal's can do that to a BA.
In other words, if you're visiting your relatives in Ocean County, or if for some godforsaken reason you actually live there, check out the Joe Canal's in Brick. Because I said so, that's why...
