16oz glass at Beer Revolution in downtown Edmonton - can't find out anything about this brew, even from Grizzly Paw's website - a one-off?
This beer appears a very dark red cola highlighted brown colour, with one chubby finger of puffy, somewhat foamy, and bubbly tan head, which leaves a decent wall of frozen front window lace around the glass as things slowly sink away.
It smells of grainy, and lightly roasted caramel malt, a subtle nut-tinged cocoa powder thing, faint black orchard fruit, free-range wet ash, and plain leafy, weedy, and floral hop bitters. The taste is sort of toasty caramel malt, a bland hot chocolate milky sweetness, gritty anise root, char, and more understated weedy, leafy, and musty hoppiness.
The bubbles are fairly moderate in their laid-back frothiness, the body an adequate middleweight, and sort of smooth, a blase clamminess slowly arising from the get-go. It finishes off-dry, the faintly milky cocoa and weakening caramel malt in a dance of the mildly damned.
Once again, the production brewery in Canmore just dials it in - there's nothing really going on here to make me even overly excited to finish my pint, let alone consider the titular bender. Well, maybe if my legs were burning after a day spent in those hills nearby, and someone else was buying.
