Thickest, creamiest head I’ve ever seen. Rich coffee and Belgian chocolate aromas, perfect sweetness to balance everything out and massive mouthfeel without getting sticky.

Glad I finally got to try this- a surprise on tap at Salt & Smoke BBQ in St. Louis. Couldn’t pass it up to pair with some smoky bbq. Nice black pour with a brownish creamy head. Aroma is huge roast and strong oily coffee beans. Flavor is nutty, roasty coffee, dark chocolate, dark malt body. Very smooth, and not too heavy for a beer that is concealing 10% ABV very well. Amazing. Would love to try a barrel aged version. Paired great with St. Louis ribs!

Bottle share. Aroma brings heat, peppers and alcohol. Taste gets better, smooth, slick, sweet and some peppers.. Blended nicely, peppers add the right amount without being overdone. Sweetness tempers the peppers. Just done right. Excellent.

Inky, pours thick, thin head and light carbonation. Aroma obviously features lots of coffee, dark & robust but folded-in nicely with the base beer, it isn’t overpowering. Taste follows suit - coffee adds layers of flavor but isn’t “pow” in your face. Nice dark / chocolate malt base that compliments the coffee well. Smooth, velvety mouthfeel. Not my personal favorite coffee beer but excellent nonetheless.

Big, heavy stout that packs in a ton of coffee. It somehow hides most of the alcohol except a little sneaks in the finish. Good quality coffee and chocolate flavor. Nicely carbonated and full body. Luscious texture.

Bottle dated 01/2017 into a tulip.

L: Pours jet black with 2+ fingers of frothy medium density chocolate brown head with great retention and left mixed lacing.

S: Potent roasted attributes, coffee and malt. Malt takes more prominence as it warms. Coffee fades a bit, possibly due to the age on the bottle.

T: Follows the nose well, coffee is delightful and held well for the age. Finishes with moderate bitterness, lingers a bit, hides the ABV well.

F: Low-medium bodied with medium-high carbonation, lively on the tongue, slick on the finish.

O: I'd bought this to share with a friend who's a coffee fanatic. Life happened and the share never happened. The Drink It Now Day challenge from Allagash and Odell was as good a reason as any to open it. A bit more age on it than ideal, but it held up very well for my palate and preferences. Definitely going to be grabbing this one again!

Bottled 01.2015 Drank 02.09.18

My bad - I didn't realize this was stuck away and when I found it I drank it immediately. I'm not sure if I just don't like the Sump coffee taste, or if there was something off with the bottle as I've had other coffee stouts past their time, and completely enjoyed them despite them losing their coffee taste and smell. It almost tasted to me like black coffee that had been sitting in the pot for an extra day. So I'm just going to review it as is and maybe come back to a fresh bottle some day. I am on the lookout for the BA version, so if that one is a completely different story, I'm going to nix this review and assume I just got a bad bottle and track another one down.
