Had on Draft at Mikeller and Friends in Copenhagen. Possibly the best BA stout I've ever had. Pitch black pour with a quickly receding mocha head. Nose is strong chocolate, fruit, and caramel. Flavor is chocolate milk up front, oak in the middle, and smooth whiskey on the finish. An incredibly strong whiskey kick on the end, but the richness of the beer holds up well to provide incredible balance. Mouthfeel is viscous and chewy, a very strong resemblance to Cory King's other beers. In all, this beer was a surprising and remarkable experience. Should be considered among the top tier of non-adjunct stouts.

Review written from detailed tasting notes at first tapping, August 12, 2015.

A- Pour came to me with no head present at all in the inky, black body of the beer. I watched the pour coming out of the tap and it looked very thick as it hit the glass. There were a few chocolate colored bubbles on the top of the beer, but that was it, so there was lacing to speak of. As you drink there are some good alcohol legs.

S- The barrel makes itself known right up front and is the focal point of the scent. Spicy char from the barrel and light vanilla sweetness are the prominent barrel flavors displayed before the dark and burnt malts take over the smell. The alcohol presence ramps up and mixes with the barrel characteristics to give a fairly boozy component to the scent that lingers in the nose.

T- The taste of the beer kind of follows a reverse arc of the smell, with sweet, dark malts and burnt, black malts right up front when the beer hits the tongue. Quickly, the barrel flavors move in and the same spice, char, and touch of vanilla from the scent take over. In the middle of the drink, there is a good dose of whiskey flavor that moves right back into sweeter malts at the end of the drink, leaving a sweet and boozy flavor as the departing impressions.

M- Among the smoothest and thickest beers I have had to date, this beer has almost no carbonation and drinks not quite as thick as chocolate milk. There is a bit of a drying sensation on the palate at the end of the drink and there is a moderate amount of warming from the alcohol content. Definitely a sipper and a warmer that would be phenomenal in the dead of winter.

Overall, this is a fairly complex, very barrel forward, and just a little bit dry imperial stout. I really think the age of the whiskey barrels used mellowed out some of the harsher characteristics usually found in similar beers and allowed a lot more of the barrel's nuances to be tasted. I really enjoyed the complex barrel spice in this beer. A very well done beer.

The beer hits of sticky, syrupy bourbon and toffee, almost like maple syrup was added to the beer. Onto dark fruits with dried plums, dates, and bittersweet chocolate, vanilla, cherry cordial, chocolate fudge. The finish moves onto charred oak with some woody tannins drying the brew out.

The beer is a serious contender with Bourbon County Rare with how soft and deep the nose is along with the intense, yet soft barrel character.

On draft at Brouwers during Big Wood. Pours rich thick and dark black. Minimal tan head. The smell oh the smell. Oaky woody and chocolate and mild bourbon smell. Taste the wonderful oakiness up front with a nice balancevofbthe bourbon. Nice thick mouthfeel. Awesome beer.
