This beer hits the glass in a thick stream of black liquid, just as you would expect. A small and dense head forms, but is quickly down to just a trace on the edges of the beer. There is just a touch of lacing. When I take a sniff of this beer I am first reminded of the scent of the Perennial tasting room. It is a slightly malty scent that has a Belgian yeast undertone. After that initial impression on the nostrils, the coconut takes over and becomes prominent. Dark malts move in next and mix in with the coconut to balance the scent.

When the beer hits the tongue, there is a blend of dark malts, chocolate, and light coconut flavors. The chocolate comes through first, with a touch of dark, burnt malts, but the coconut comes in quickly. The coconut is subtle and moves in and out pretty quickly before the silky and semisweet chocolate moves back in. The chocolate is very milk-chocolatey and smooth while being slightly sweet. The burnt malts and coconut move back in a touch at the end and linger just a little bit after the drink. The overall feel of this beer on the palate is very smooth, thick, and creamy. The lactose provides a silky quality that is really superb.

Overall, this beer is a pretty complex and delicious stout. The coconut is very subtle, but definitely there, and the real star here is the milk chocolate flavor and texture of the beer. One of the smoothest drinks you will have in a beer.

Smells and tasted as advertised, sweet milk stout with coconut. Thinner feel, but it is a milk stout, it's expected. Overall I really enjoyed it. Big coconut on a sweet milk stout base. Not mind blowing, but very nice.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #76 (May 2013):

Smells great, more like a confection than a beer, which is an impressive feat. Flavors open up more after each sip. While not immensely complex, the melding of the roasted character and coconut is nothing short of absolutely delicious.

STYLE: Milk Stout w/ Coconut
ABV: 8.8%
AVAILABILITY: Summer Seasonal

LOOK: Black, brown lacing

SMELL: Chocolate, charred grain, toasted coconut, currants

TASTE: Sweet, full bodied, mild roasted grain, chocolate, breakfast roast coffee, coconut, faint brown sugar, cooked raisins, crackers, sweet finish

Appearance - The milk stout poured a deep black color with bubbles crowning the sides of the glass.

Smell - The malts come to the front in the aroma with a sense of chocolate

Taste - Dark chocolate with raspberry is the initial impression. Coconut yields to the malt, making is somewhat faint. The chocolate has a sour tint which gives the impression of an overall fruitiness. Slightly sour creamy chocolate dominates the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - The lactose gives an overall smoothness to the mouthfeel with modest carbonation.

Overall - I hope this beer is not really retired because I like it a lot.
