Served on-tap at the brewery.

A - pours a clear yellow color with a small head that disappears quickly. No presence of a head remains after minutes.

S - nose is lots of fresh peaches with a little bit of sour lactose, but not much

T - opens up with really tart, sour lemon notes that move on to the softer peach flavors. The sour and peach flavors hold strong and don't really give way to much else, but that's not a bad thing. OVerall, this is more sour than expected compared to others berliner weisbiers I have tried, but that's not a bad thing.

M - spritzy and well carbonated. How else could it be a berliner if it wasn't?

D - This is a nice take on the style by Perennial - I haven't had one with fruit before and really enjoyed it. Tart, refreshing, flavorful, low abv? Yes, please.

On-draught @ Jake Melnick's Corner Tap in Chicago Illinois. Truncated notes taken on a phone below:

Reviewed live as a Berliner weiss per the name. Expectations are high; this sounds delicious!

No bubble show forms as it's poured (from what I can see).

APPEARANCE: 1-2cm wide head of off white colour. Milky and frothy, with a weirdly supple creamy head that's way off-style. Oddly thick consistency. Retention is average - 2 minutes. Leaves no lacing.

Body is a golden copper of average vibrance, with a translucent and transparency that suggests filtration. No yeast can be seen within.

Beer appears well carbonated. Overall appearance is decent, but it has no stand-out characteristics.

AROMA: Muted peach is present, but it's not particularly vivid or expressive. A bit of peachy tartness sets off the mikd sourness (which seems to be about a 3/10 in terms of intensity). Fresh wheat and clean barley lurk beneath, providing a base for the lactic acid twang. Some may find hints of apricot.

Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE: Lactic acid twang mingles with mild (2/10) sourness over the predictable wheat and clean barley backbone. Hopping is minimal, but I'd say its profile is grassy if you put me on the spot. Well balanced, albeit not as peachy or sour as I'd find ideal. Depth of flavour could be much better, particularly where the peach is concerned. It's just not as vivid or expressive as you'd find in the best execution of this premise.

TEXTURE: Mildly acidic, smooth, wet, and a biteen sour - but not smacky or puckering. Light bodied and refreshing to style. This texture harmonizes neatly with the flavours, coaxing out nuance from the bacteria. Well carbonated.

Well executed, though it doesn't elevate the beer as a whole.

OVERALL: Highly drinkable, and a superb summer beer - even if it doesn't quite nail the style or reach the apex of this premise in particular. A peach Berliner Weiss is a great idea, but as good as this, I've definitely had better. Absolutely worth trying though, and unquestionably a beer I'd get again. Though with superior domestic offerings like Anderson Valley's Blood Orange Gose on the market, I doubt I'll be reaching for a 6 pack anytime soon.
