Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.40%

Notes / Commercial Description:
When most folks thing of Cape May they imagine Victorian Inns and parasols. Forget all that. Devil's Reach is a narrow passageway in Cape May Harbor and is a fitting name for this beer. Why you ask? The Devil's Reach is smooth and complex. It glides like a shark through the water and will swallow you whole. At 8.4% ABV, this Belgian is a beast.

a cloudy orange-yellow with a finger of bright white head. smells of belgian yeast strain, slightly hoppy, sweet pilsner malt, mustard seed. the flavor is much like the aroma.. mustard seed, lots of bready sweetness pilsner style malt, grassy hops, belgian saison style yeast, peppery. lightly carbonated, medium body - served cold is one of the most refreshing beers i've ever had .. and you can in no way tell this is a strong booze heavy beer.. drinks like a 5-6% not 8%+

truly a great take on this (to me) bland style of beer. somehow a heavy beer doesn't fit the summer profile, but this beer has summer written all over it, and again - does not in any way feel like a heavy beer.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #87 (Apr 2014):

Spicy, Warming, Fruity

From the southern tip of New Jersey comes a beast of a Belgian inspired Strong Ale. Thoughts of ripe pears and green peppercorns come to mind. Very Belgian-esque from spice and alcohol to fruit and rustic, it could be seen as a Saison though we’d be splitting hairs and it stands tall enough within its style.

It's not hard to understand why the makers warn you to be careful, lest this beast "swallow you up." The thin head fades pretty quickly, but a pleasant malty/sweet beginning makes you not care about the head whatsoever. A sweet nose that hints at the alcohol is there as well. The mouthfeel is as thin as the flavor is full, and this beer goes down VERY smoothly. At 8.4%, this beer is dangerously good, though hopheads might not like it, but keep in mind that it's a Belgian style ale, and a strong one at that...not sessionable, unless it's your birthday. Which it is. I'll have another, please.

This was poured into a chalice. The appearance had a decent hazy yellow to orange color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute. There was some light lacing sticking around the glass. The smell had some sweet Belgian candy notes with a light apple and orange fruitiness and then a light Belgian spice to complement. The taste followed the nose. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. There’s a light creamy harsh yet smooth appeal on my tongue. Overall, it's a pretty decent Belgian strong ale.

- On tap. shaker pint.

A: Golden orange coloring, thin covering, no carbonation with a quickly retreating head.

T: Tropical fruitiness on the nose, fresh pineapple, candy sugar, and a bit of orange-apple.

T: Flavor was fruity, tropical, pineapple-orange, sweet malt based. Yeasty applesauce, sweet candi sugar and spicy belgian hops.

M: Softly carbonated, good body per style.

O: Overall good drinkability, sweet and fruity. A beast that drinks like a lamb, sharp clarity of flavor and very smooth.
