Pours a deep brown with a big fizzy head. Smell has some powerful fruit notes. Grapes. Pears. Yeast. Caramel. Spices. Flavor mirrors the smell in this beer. Rich caramel body. Fruit notes in the background. Barnyard yeasty finish. Dull sweetness throughout. Bitey bitterness in the finish also. Medium bodied. Very well carbonated. Somewhat dry finish. Overall a very solid dubbel.

Poured from a 11.2oz bottle into a St. Bernardus chalice. **Be careful for foam ups with this brewery**

A - Poured a Brownish/red color. The Pour produced a head of slightly off-white foam which dispersed after a few sips and left a bubbly film.

S - Malty/Bready with hints of dark ripe fruit and a slight banana/clove aroma usually associated with Weiss Beer.

T - Lots of the banana/clove/bubble gum flavors
you would associate with a weiss or dunkel weiss. Slightly herbal. Finishes off slightly dry.

MF&D - Medium/thin bodied. Good carbonation and drinkablity make this one a winner.

P: A speckled mahogany body with a dollop of off white head that fades to a bubbly wake.

S: A controlled caramel, great Belgian yeast strain, subdued sweet dark fruits, clove, the black bottom part of a banana, pumpernickel bread and spicy hops. Aroma is similar to a musty cardboard fruit container.

T/M: Malty caramel, bready yeast, dark fruits, booze, and spices. Vivacious medium body that finishes dry with green apple tartness and bitter spiced tea tannin.

O: Complex and perfectly balanced. I gotta say I love it and want some more of it. The balance is what really shines here. Not over barring in any way but just nicely married. Cheers!

Purchased March 2006 at Gomer's in KC, had a date of best before 8-13-07. Poured into my Chimay goblet.

Pours a reddish brown, check that, just about a mahogany color with a thin film of bubbles forming the head.
Aroma- dark roasted sugars, dried fruits reminiscent of an aged English Barleywine. I also get a faint cidery smell.
Mouthfeel- rich dried fruits, even at 6.7% I get the slightest bit of warmth from the alcohol. This one has obviously aged alot with the yeast having mellowed but it still comes through without being too fruity or estery.
I liked this and I feel I like Dubbels and Abbey styles when they have aged. The sediment in this one was very dark.

Poured into St. Bernardus glass brown with a one finger white head. Decent lacing. Smells of nuts and grapefruit. The taste is warming, with that grapfruit flavor coming out along with a nutty dryness. The mouthfeel is just about perfect. There is no alcohol burn because of the lower alcohol level, so the drinkability is good.

Poured from 11.2oz bottle into Chimay goblet.

L - Medium brown pour with slight red notes, a finger of sandy foam.

S - Brown sugar, brown bread, toasted grain. Not a lot of nose but should develop as it warms.

T - Whole grain bread, not super sweet, but very grainy.

F - Creamy carbonation, dry finish.

Subdued table beer. All the notes are there, but well balanced for drinkability.

This is another wonderful Belgian Dubbel. The head and retention are just amazing. You'll get a fairly white frothy head that just doesn't quit. The lacing is amazing, the color a dark brown, lots of haze in there as well. The smell is medicinal, a bit soapy, just okay, and not at all representative of what you're in for. The taste is quintessentially complex. The is a medium bodied beer, very well carbonated, plenty of yeasty fizz characteristic of the style, but not overly so. There are your typical candied sugars in the fermentation, and lots of yeast like citrus flavors. I'm detecting green apple, pear, rind, and orange, maybe some coriander. The reality is that the beer is fermented with none of these fruits, but it is merely a product of the yeast and candied sugars. It truly is an amazing feat of Belgian brewing. The mouthfeel is a little too watery, somewhat creamy, a little light. This along with the smell are the weak spots of the beer, if you want to call them that. You'll get some light caramel flavors on the back end of this beer as well. This beer is well worth seeking out. L'Chaim.

Re-review January 2011: I would add that there are some doughy caramel in the flavors. There is a bit of a banana bread hint or two in the beer. Less coriander, more of the doughy malts. The prickly mouthfeel is a bit more subdued than in many other beers of the style. The aroma is also better this time around.

Cloudy, dark amber. Rich rocky head with good lacing on the way down. Aroma has some yeast, but other wise pretty clean and subtle, with a bit of hops and sweetness.

Yeasty, with interesting textural sensations on the tongue. Pretty subtle and smooth. A touch of clove, spice, a bit of dark fruit. Good amount of hops make this brew unexpectedly bitter and refreshing. Not too strong or warming at 6.7%. Phenomenal mouthfeel-- buttery, creamy, filling the mouth.

Overall a delicious, drinkable, and refreshing dubbel.

Poured from a 33cL bottle into a Rochefort glass.

A: Pours a milk-chocolate brown with bubble trails and formations on the surface. The head dissipates almost immediately, but foam remains on the edges. Looks very pretty.

S: Initial malt with heavy underlying fruity scents. A touch of molasses or raw sugar.

T: Very good! Slightly bubbly, with a light tartness, not of citrus, but of apple or underripe pear. This is pushed aside by stronger flavours of malt, dark fruit, and a bitterness, like cocoa. The main taste is sweetish, with a hint of spice, but the aftertaste is hoppy, bitter, and slightly dry.

M: Carbonated, tart, and spicy. Good, but the aftertaste bitterness is not entirely pleasant.

D: I thoroughly enjoyed this beer, but I probably wouldn't drink another the same night, or buy it again for a while. Very different from the Prior 8 and, in my opinion, not quite as good.

Appearance: Pours a gorgeous, almost impenetrable amber with a massive off-white foamy head!

Smell: Dates, raisins, caramel malts and vanilla. Excellent.

Taste: Follows the nose with some nice carbonation and potent alcohol finish. Big dried fruit flavor well-balanced by the toasty malts and vanilla flavors.

Mouthfeel: Fantastic. Very light-bodied, but still potent and big on flavor. Leaves a nice, sweet aftertaste.

Drinkability: For the style, this is one of the only beers I could have another of (which I wont b/c this is my last one!) Goes down easy and finishes clean.

This is one of the best by my favorite Belgian monk, St. Bernardus! If you can get your hands on it, I highly recommend it. Low ABV for the style, but still packs a punch with some great complex flavors.

Pours a chestnut brown color with an amber hue. The head is off white, falls quickly to a light coating and ring that leave rings of lacing.

The aroma is complex and inviting, caramelized pecans, earthy (mushrooms and peat), fruit (green and ripe bananas, figs), dates. Sweet, earthy, spicy, and nutty.

The first thing I taste is sweet fruit which quickly fades to an earthy flavor which in turn fades to a dry nutty finish. Almost cider like.

The best way I can describe this beer would be "Light Barleywine".

The body is kind of light, there is a nice blast of carbonation that makes the flavors explode on your tongue.

This is a great beer with a lot of flavors, but 1 or 2 is enough for me.

Delicious and rich, malty, ripe figs, nice smooth finish. No acute sweetness, did I mention delicious? Really well done, you can tell the brewmasters are keen on quality. had one these for the last eight years and i have never been disappointed. An everyday Belgian no matter what season of the year.

Serving Type: 330 mL

A- Opaque Brown with a large off-white head that sticks around a good while before working down to a thick skim. Light lacing on the glass.

S- Dried apricot, plum, toffee, bready malt, and a bit of alcohol are present in the noses.

T- Toffee, toasty malt, dried apricot, raisin, plum, and a little spice.

M- Medium body with light-moderate carbonation. Quite drinkable when compared to other Dubbels I've had.

O- Not my favourite offering from St. Bernardus but it is a great beer. Beautiful malty flavour that is complemented well by an abundance of dried fruit.
