Republic was a solid selection by a friend of mine on a recent trip to the Twin Cities. We needed to park in the parking garage across the street, near a hotel, but I was cool with that.
It looks like a corner pub from the outside, and, once inside, I got the same impression. However, we seemed to be the only plebs there; our fellow customers looked avant-garde and hipster chic. I guess the place is near a “theatre,” so I guess it serves as a watering hole before and after shows. There was a long bar, high tables along the wall, tables in the back, and at least one other overflow room behind the bar. (Based on the website, I think there may be an outside patio, too.) We sat in the bar area, where it was pretty dark. I almost needed to use the mood candle to read the menu.
The waitress gave us a few extra minutes to look at the beer menu, which was impressive. The beer of the day was Alaskan White Ale and the featured beer was Hop Slam. Any bar that serves Hop Slam immediately impresses me. Many of the beers were Midwestern, which I liked: there were beers from Brau Brothers, Bells, Capital, and Surly. My first beer was a Stone Smoked Porter, which I had only seen on tap at Pure Luck (RIP) in LA. After that I drank two Left Hand Milk Stouts.
My friends loved their food, and the spinach and artichoke dip with tortilla chips was awesome. However, the portobella mushroom sandwich I ordered was pretty pathetic; I inhaled it in a couple bites. The sandwiches and burgers did not come with a choice of sides, which surprised me; I really could have used some fries. (The fries, though, were on the menu as an appetizer.) When one of us asked for ranch dressing on a salad, the waitress told us they did not serve ranch. What?!
The atmosphere was pretty chill, the beer selection was good, and the food was affordable. If I ever visit again I think it will be more for the beer than the food, and I will definitely order the small plate of fries.

Would move this to the top of my list for favorite palces in Minneapolis. Excellent selection, full pours and flights. Nice little food menu too. Bacon, egg, lettuce and tomato was a big hit. Cozy adn comfortable, ambient lighting. Loved this place.

Came here during a recent work trip to Minneapolis and Saint Paul.
Tried the following:
Steel Toe Size 7 IPA (draft)
Summit Brewing Keller Pils (draft)
The Keller Pils was awesome (very bright and fresh) while the Size 7 was just okay. Tap selection was pretty good on my visit, though not quite as earth shattering as I expected given all the accolades this place gets. Didn’t eat anything. Typical long dark wood bar setup with lots of natural light coming in. They seem to attract a younger/university crowd. Service was underwhelming as the bartender failed to engage even though I was the only patron sitting at the bar. My overall experience was average, and I don’t think I’d come back.

Great place just off of the light rail. I was visiting with a friend who took me here. Large tap list with local beers. Excellent service with knowledgeable bartenders. Beautiful bar and ample seating. Food is solid. Vibe reminds me of a classic laid back Midwest craft beer bars. Maybe a lot of nostalgia kicking in for the Midwest but really loved this bar.

This is a place I could gush over for hours. Inside does not have a single television but looks like it has been preserved from some much older time. Inside is absolutely beautiful. Outside is a good sized patio. Personally, their happy hour is the best for a beer bar in the Twin Cities between their food and beer reduced prices and frequency. Their service is always solid and their prices are on point. Their food is out of this world and made from scratch, even their ketchup. They offer some like 75 beers on tap but they do not seem to change very often. Overall, the selection is still very good, it only becomes a problem when you go a few times a week for a long period of time.

Nice place, great tap list, gets crowded. Easy on and off the green line. The food menu is upscale pub options. Great burger and good wings.
Staff is attentive, even when it gets crowded for happy hour and weekend nights. Lots of great local and national craft options. Always have something from the tap on special. Prices are good overall.

A place you can always count on for a great tap list, above average food-not your typical bar food, and knowledgeable bartenders. Very nice indoor seating with outdoor seating outfront as well. Definitely a go to place. Parking isn't ideal.

Long, classic bar with an English/Euro feel to it. Comfortable place I hung out for a while in.
Friendly, chatty server behind the bar. Just my type - obvious that he knew beer, but not real snobby about it and conversed well about sports and the eclectic music selection from his ipod.
Broad selection of local/national craft beers that are served in good shape and at reasonable prices. Will definitely stop in again next time I'm in town.

An excellent craft beer destination with interesting and varied gastropub food offerings.
Long bar with a multitude of tap handles. Very nice wood and brick interior with lots of beautiful stained glass panels. Outstanding variety of beers and ciders, with many world class (e.g., St. Bernardus ABT 12; Triple Karmeliet; La Trappe Quad) and limited beers on tap. A fairly up to date lists of taps is available on their website. Flights available.

We had the pleasure of visiting Republic while we were in town interviewing for residency positions at the University of Minnesota. This place happened to be across the street from our hotel, and after some quick research, we discovered it was recently labelled as one of the “Top 100 Beer Bars in America”!! We, of course, had to experience it.
Again, located immediately across the street from our accommodations, we were able to easily access it via a brief walk. Parking garages were close, and easily accessible as well, but were not free. You came through the front door into an open space, met first by the long bar on your right that stretches the length of the pub, and six to eight high-top tables lining the wall to your left. The bar, which seated 20-30 people, was loaded with 100+ taps, flanking either side of the bartender’s space, and included ciders and meads in addition to a vast, and well-planned, selection of craft beer. Wine and liquor were also available, and tended to be local offerings. The beer menu was organized by style, and contained many local beers in addition to classics from around the world. We were particularly excited to see their “Minnesota IPA” section of the menu, which helped shape our night, for certain. We ended up ordering four beers to sample, splitting them all. Two were off this local IPA list, while the others were Minnesotan stouts, from across their great state. It wasn’t until our first bathroom break that we discovered the true size of Republic. Walking to the end of the bar revealed an expansive seating area, including another ten to fifteen high top tables, and a larger traditional dining area split into another two longitudinal sections.
The whole establishment held onto a darker "English pub" vibe, and was decorated with glowing red candles and beautiful low-hanging stained glass lights. Specials for appetizers, beers, and the daily cheese were written on large chalk boards posted around the bar. Wrapping around the topside of the bar, amidst an ornately carved wooden ceiling and crown moulding, where inlaid stained glass windows that allowed the lazy afternoon sun to brighten the space with a bit of color. There were no televisions and, at least at 4 o'clock on this Saturday afternoon, it seemed like a quiet place to catch up with friends.
We arrived just before happy hour began. Happy hour was from 4-6pm and 10-12pm, seven days a week. We actually thought it was really cool that they did this twice a day, allowing you some late-night deals for some nightcaps or fourth meal. It boasted discounts on every beer, and special prices on several food items, so what’s not to love?! We ordered cauliflower-feta fritters, homemade chips and guacamole, the daily cheese board, and mock duck tacos. As 50% of our party ate vegetarian, the selection of meat-free items was highly appreciated. Everything was delicious and was brought to us seemingly within five to ten minutes of the order by a very friendly and beer-savvy staff. Dishes were well portioned, although we did need a few more slices of baguette to aid us in eliminating the cheese. We happily ate, and the bar area and restaurant rapidly started to fill around us as the night wore on. We decided to get a last-minute train to the Minnesota Wild hockey game, but otherwise would have stayed perched at our corner of the bar all night long. We even tried to get back from the game in time for another pint and some mock duck tacos to-go, but were sadly disappointed when we arrived past the kitchen’s closing.
Overall, Republic was a great place to go. The décor was unique and comfortable, and the restaurant was clean and well kept, all wrapped in an inviting, warming, and friendly atmosphere. Should we end up matching here in Minneapolis, this place will most surely become a standard.
