Great Scotch Ale. Really enjoy drinking locally made beer and this is one of the best Scotch Ale's in Alabama. Avondale does not disappoint.

Had this at the brewery. Also had this mixed with the Battlefield IPA. They call it the "Braveheart". Very fitting. I actually preferred the combination of the two.

A: Medium cooper to dark color.
S: Roasted malt aroma.
T: Caramel and Roasted touches. Strong but not over bearing.

O: Very drinkable Scottish Ale. Not bad.

Tap at brewery. Pours dark black with frothy white head. Aroma of chocolate and malts. Tastes of chocolate, malts, very slight vanilla. Light bodied. Pretty good

A - This beer has a medium to darker brown appearance as I would've expected for this style. The creamy light colored head has good retention.

S - Roasted malt dominates with hints of peat smoke. This might have something to do with Scottish yeast strain as the guy I asked said they don't use any smoked malts.

T - Good caramel and roasted qualities balanced with subtle hop flavors. Just a tad of smoke at the finish but quickly fades and finishes clean. (This beer is a malt bomb!)

M - Smooth and creamy as one might hope for in any kind of Scottish beer. Really enjoyed this rich but sessionable brew.

O - Would drink this beer often as the weather gets colder or any time I am craving a malty treat (or two) at the end of the day.

Served in a pint glass at the brewpub. From notes. Reviewed 23 November 2014.
4/4/4/3.5/4.5
Translucent brown.
Smells like coffee. Nutty-bitter with a light (malty?) sweetness.
Full-flavored and excellent! Initiall full of brown sugar and crème brûlée, there is some lightly tart fruit. Wonderfully complex.
The mouthfeel is a little bland or thin, but not unobjectionable.
Supremely enjoyable and recommended. Not sure how well it fits the style, but still good.

Poured at the brewery.

A: Dark brown with a tan half-finger head that lingers. Light lacing.

S: Toffee and malt. A bit of peat smokiness.

T: The malts come tumbling down. Chocolate and light vanilla follow. Not over the top, but not too exciting either.

M: Medium with medium, creamy carbonation.

O: I was hoping for more. But this one was a standard, malty Scotch ale. A good gateway beer to the style.
