Visited Avondale for the first time on October 30th, so I never got to see how it was prior to the renovations. Either way, glad I finally made it in. The vibe is mellow, the main taproom is clean and neat. Head out back and there’s an awesome event space and outdoor concert stage, along with an outdoor bar and a separated indoor featuring experimental sour styles.

I liked the neatness of the new Avondale look, and for the brief time we were there the service was good. Avondale’s beers are always reliably solid, but that also leads me into the biggest issue I’ve always had with them: for having been around for right at 10 years, their selection is so safe and boring.

It always seems like they have the same core beers on tap year round, with only a few rotating options. The Sour Room is an exception, but even then the pickings are slim and if you’re not a sour beer fan, then it’s irrelevant. All that said, I like the spot, and Avondale is a really cool scene in Birmingham. Be sure to hit Saw’s BBQ right around the corner, too; it’ll change your life.

Freshly in town for what’s going to be a 14 hour excursion at best, we drop our shit at the hotel and set out for Avondale (as they close at 11 and we’re hoping to do a Birmingham one-two, if you know what I mean). Uber dumped on the corner and in while Phil catches a smoke (he has not changed). We’ll set up (read: We'll be at the bar) and let him find us; that 5 hours from N’Orleans was more like 7 hours with the wander offs and stop abouts. I’m thinking I can use a beers…

Old brick walls with logo elephant pieces and house beer prints on the side side, and paneled garage doors to both sides of the entrance opening over 2nd Ave up front. Concrete floors, rafter ceilings with ductwork, drop hairdryer glass lamps tracing the bar, & some spinny fans over the floor.

Freshly laminated pieced plank topped ‘L’ shaped bar, barrel stave & band base, and a squared foot rail; seating for a dozen and a half on wood chairs. Rolling kegerators on the inside of the bar with double 2 tap cylinders sporting Fancy logo handles. Counter piece barback with glassware lined & stacked counterside & shelved above, and tulips dangling beneath a center flatscreen. Uniform patches and elephantings up there, too.

There’s a bar counter piece behind me on the wall seating 8. And a small brewery system on the back side of the back side of the bar, brewing a whole lot of nothing right now as it’s all under construction but it seems they stocked up before they took it all down, like they did Sour Room next door (sadness abounds).

Taps displayed on a corner of the bar vertical slat board (beer & ABV). 18 beers, ciders, & seltzers up at current. I sampled and/or shortied through about 2/3 of them (Mill City White, Belgian Wit, 5%, coriander, yep; Spring Street Saison, 7.2%, a solid Saison; Miss Fancy’s Tripel, 9.2%, candy sugar, and there’s a bite; Vanillaphant Porter, a Vanilla Porter, 6.2%, not overwhelmingly vanilla but in the sweet spot before vanilla becomes a problemo; Battlefield IPA, 6.8%, a real nice West Coast IPA; Train Hopper Pale Ale, 5.5%, citrus & pine; Long Branch Scottish Ale, 5.2%, just slightly Scotchy and not unpleasantly so; Warning Shot Double IPA, 8.5%; a sturdy hop bomb, dank dank; Plum Tart, 4.6%, dark fruit, funky, & tart; Sour Pash Passionfruit Sour, 4.3%, tart, lovely; No Joka Mocha Stout, 7.2%, oooooooooh, coffee), but couldn’t get to the other 1/3 (Hazy IPA, 6.3%; Jam Juice IPA, 6%; Streetcar Kolsch, 4.3%; Mexican Lager, 4.8%; Dry Hopped Reunir, tart Farmhouse ale, 5.2%; Farmhouse Cider, 5%; Lemon Head Seltzer, 5%). Plum Tart, No Joka Mocha Stout, Battlefield IPA, Sour Pash Passionfruit Sour for the win, although really everything was of the good.

Went on walkabout to find a ginormous backyard space with a big ass stage, full bar, & 2 dozen+ tables for the sittin’ at. They do shows. I was told they can hold (like) 2000 people back there. Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn.

Happy to have landed here this evening. Beers were good, the place comfortable, and our Reevestender told the sweet tale of Miss Fancy & Mr. Todd. Hell yes, when in Birmingham!

A really great brewery in Birmingham. Nice selection, great service. A good selection of hoppy beers, and sours can be had at their satellite location nearby. Truly great beers, service, and vibe. Nice collection of locals, College folks and great bartender makes for a good mix!

We hit this first on our trip into Birmingham. It was the Friday afternoon before the FL vs. MIss St game. There were a lot of gators in the brewery which added to the atmosphere. The bartender was quite helpful and all the patrons seems to be engaging. I started with the Scottish ale and it was spot on. Great smokey notes from the peated barley and deep caramel sweetness. They were setting up for a big event that evening in their back courtyard. It appeared they could hold up to 1,000 people for concert in the back. There was even a serving bar in the courtyard that could accommodate the concert goers. I believe they had 14 taps going of their different styles. And it wasn't 10 different IPAs.

I visited Avondale Brewing's sister location, the Sour Room. The Sour Room is located just around the corner. Once you enter there are booths, tables/chairs, bar and an outside patio area.

This was a nice complement to Avondale Brewing's main tasting room. I didn't visit the main location but you can hear the live music on stage at the nearby Sour Room. That was cool. Next time, I will try out the main tasting room.

Sour Room had 10 sours on tap. I had four taster glasses. They were nice sours. The lone server was very busy with everyone's orders but did a nice job to provide good service with a smile.

Enjoyed my visit!

Going to kinda dual review this place. Went to the brewery and the sour room. The sour room is like a 60's lounge with a nice patio and a bocce court. They had an extensive list of taps with everything from saisons to berliner weisse to true sours. Everything I had there was solid. Nice chill vibe if you want to escape the madness. The main brewery is around the corner and when you walk in, it is almost like walking in a pub. L shape bar and a few tables, but out back is a beir garden and that is the action is. There is a ton of space there and another bar in the back to serve those outside. There is a massive stage and I was lucky to be there one Sunday when they had a R&B group on stage. Place was packed and lots of energy and good music. Tried the Saison and the IPA. I think they have a better finesse on the Saison

V- Very young vibe, mostly 20s-30s. Might not be elders favorite hangout. Nice and young vibrant vibe though. I liked it personally.
Q- Great quality of people and beer. Along with a pizza joint right next deer. The bar itself was a bit small, but the sour room was awesome. They also had a nice outside area. It had a nice wooden and elegant vibe.
S- Kinda took the guy a long time.
Selection- One of my favorites in the area. Great beers.

Visited twice after supper while in Birmingham for the Barber Vintage Motorcycle Festival with Bro, Bob, Don Allen and Tom. Really cool place with a broad range of beers. Way cool outside area for events, food, etc. We had SAW's Soul Food barbeque one night and Post Office Pies pizza the next. Saw their Barktoberfest event - dog costume contest - and enjoyed the beautiful outdoors. Please visit this place..it's very cool.

This is the brewery/bar that everyone seems to hang out at. We were at Avondale around 3:00 on a Saturday afternoon and there were 100 plus in the bar and another hundred out back with their dogs. The place is dog friendly and folks take advantage. Lots of happy people and plenty of great beers flowing. The interior is really cool, depicting its historic aspects. Good prices on flights as well as pints. Highly recommended.

Best brewery in Alabama. Great selection of beers to fit anyone's pallet. Awesome place to hang out or see one of the many 5 star concerts they have each year. A must stop if in Birmingham.

Situated in a former industrial area of Birmingham, this brewery and taproom is a must visit. They have a large indoor bar and an even larger outdoor area that’s dog-friendly. The brewery has at least 15 beers on tap, ranging in style from saisons to dark porters. The beers are delicious and the staff is very friendly. They have multiple TVs to watch sports and they have to host bands and other events. If you ever find yourself in downtown Birmingham, give this place a try. You’ll have fun.
