I bought this because I thought the Broken Skull IPA was awesome and this one is on par. Pretty similar to Broken Skull but definitely different flavor characteristics. This brewery knows how to make a really solid IPA in the style I like. yp

16oz can dated 2/10/20.

Pours clear yellow with an inch of white head. Moderate retention and lacing. A bit dank and garlicky in the nose with chaulky pine following through. Medium bodied with a crisp, slightly tacky mouthfeel. Pine and grapefruit with a touch of sweet malt in the palate. Finishes crisp and bitter.

Did Fred Flinstone work at the rock quarry? I think so. Well, if he brewed a beer, it would be Mayberry, because this one is rock solid. This one is SoCal like a quesadilla for lunch and a mission burrito for dinner. Wow. Thank you. Thank you El Segundo for this beautiful West Side IPA that would make Tupac proud.

Hey Hazy’s: suck it.

Pours a clear, beautiful golden blonde, with streams of various sized bubbles rising quickly to the surface. A sea foam head sits on top, with a craggy, alive head on top. Awfully pretty.

Aroma is of big, fresh, unfermented hops -- like sticking your nose in the fridge at the homebrew store. El Segundo consistently produces these big fantastic fresh hop aromas with their IPAS, and I really don't know how they do it so well. I am just glad they do. Notes of lemongrass, under-ripe pineapple, key lime, and wet grass clippings leap out at the nose. Makes you salivate.

Taste blooms open on the tongue. Big mango juice notes start, with classic bitter grapefruit and pine flavors close behind. Secondary notes of lychee, lemon cake, and benzene rise up as the beer warms. The finish dries out slowly but completely, like a wave retreating from the shore. The tongue is left refreshed, cool, and ready for more.

Mouthfeel is bright, lean, and somewhat aggressive. The bubbles in the glass prove to be committed tongue scrubbers in the mouth. I would perhaps have liked a slightly less sharp carbonation, but if you gave this to me with fish tacos, I'd probably tell you it was right on the mark. The hop burps are pretty nice, too.

All in all, this is a great beer, and a real treat from the folks near LAX. Honestly, with the invasion of all these weak-sauce NE IPAs around here these days, I didn't even know people still made them like this anymore! A great old-school West Coast IPA, but with the benefit of what we've learned over the decades with respect to malt ratios and maximum aroma excellence. Very highly recommended.

A: The beer is relatively clear yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a thin layer of white bubbles covering the surface and a narrow collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of mangos are present in the nose along with notes of pine.
T: The taste has flavors of piney and herbal hops along with notes of mangos. There is a moderate amount of associated bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and very crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer definitely tastes like a West Coast IPA with all of the piney hops but the aromas and flavors of mangos help to take off some of their edge.

Straw filtered with light carbonation and a finger of white head.

Smells of blueberry, mulberry and malt.

The taste follows the nose.

Light body with lots of carbonation.

Really great brew.

Bottle dated '092519.'
Opted for a tulip due to high-ish ABV for the style.
The appearance was a bronzed copper color with a mellow transparency about it. A one finger white foamy head slid off to some messy sticky lace.
The aroma had some danky onion/sweet garlic adding in subtle floral and piney hop notes coating some clean biscuit malts.
The flavor leaned towards the sweet side throttling the onion and garlic tones in and around the floral and piney notes. Barely any biscuit maltiness or even much of any malts. Not much of an aftertaste but seemed to have some dry piney notes.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with some sort of sessionability about it. Good carbonation as an American IPA. Finishes crisp with some danky sweet onion.
Overall, very nice West coast styled IPA well worthy of coming back to.

Bottle poured into a Mountain Rambler Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours golden amber with a frothy off white head that settles to a light layer and laces beautifully.

S: Super dank, citrus, tropical fruit, pine, biscuity malt, and a touch of sweetness.

T: Big time skunky dank, citrus, grapefruit, lemon, lime, and tangerine, tropical fruit, lots of papaya, some guava and mango, spicy pine, a hint of bubble gum and melon, biscuity malt, and a touch of sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation, slightly creamy.

O: I didn't know they still made beers like this. Everything I remember about Mosaic IPAs when that hop first came on the scene. If you're into that kinda thing it's an intense Mosaic West Coast IPA.

A pretty darn good skunky IPA, if you know what I mean..........
Maybe I should add, very clean and crisp look with a smallish well lasting lacing. I will definitely try to drink this again.

Clear sparkling gold-amber with a large off-white foam settling in airy fits and starts, leaving fuzzy lace.

Smell is grapefruit, cracker, pine, orange, Triple Sec and biscuit.

Taste is toasty cracker with crisp and refreshing yet slightly prickly pine, warming biscuit, orange rind and a hint of lemon zest.

Body is moderate with a fluffy foam, finishing dry.

Sampled at SAVOR 2017. This brew had a very bitter and very dank scent and taste , with pithy citrus. It was clean and crisp and bold. Simply a fanatic IPA.

Love the bottle shape. Wish more beers came in little fat bottles like this. I'm not sure why I'm so enamored. Maybe it's just cute?

L: Golden body with a slight haze to it, but almost completely transparent. Bone white head with great retention and nice-looking rings of speckled lacing on the glass.

S: Tangy and peppery: Papaya, mango, pineapple, orange, lemon, guava, blueberry and plum, then a malty base with caramel sweetness and a sharp black pepper edge.

T: Art. This is an example of what the west coast IPA style is capable of. Sour at first with lemon, orange, pineapple, guava and notable mango which persists as blueberry and papaya sweeten the mix, then lemon and grapefruit rind hit, lingering almost as long as the black pepper and citrus pith. Very my style, as I tend to prefer more acidic beers.

F: Basically perfect, super easy to drink. A tiny bit of soapiness on the end.

O: Legendary stuff.

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Beer Nerd 12-oz. tulip
From: Bine & Vine Bottle Shop in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $2.33 with 10 percent off for a variety 6-pack
Purchased: Sept. 1, 2017
Consumed: Sept. 7, 2017
Reviewed as: American IPA
Misc.: Bottled on Aug. 22, 2017

Picked this up on a recent trip to Bine & Vine as part of a variety 6-pack (and 10 percent off). Had this before, giving a full pour a 3.75 back on Jan. 1, 2016. Did not have any comments on it. Generally an El Segundo fan and was looking forward to reviewing this. Bottle read, “Mosaic hops take center stage in this truly West Coast India Pale Ale. The perfect companion for enjoying a sunny day on Main Street with us in our charming little town, affectionately known as “Mayberry by the Sea.” The hops appear to be Mosaic, Chinook and Cascade from their website. You had me at Mosaic.

Poured a gold clear color with 3-to-4 fingers of rocky white head. Lots of fast-moving bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Outstanding uneven foamy and watery lacing. World-class foamy retention. (Sight - 4.25)

Smelled Mosaic, Chinook, bitter mango rind, pineapple, papaya, guava, Juicy Fruit, pine (Cascade), grass, floral and mixed berry. (Smell - 3.75)

Tasted better than the nose, but followed it. Mosaic dominated the way. Also bitter dry mango rind, pineapple, papaya, guava, pine, spicy Chinook, grass, passion fruit, Juicy Fruit, mixed berry, floral, resin and a lingering pepper taste on my lips. (Taste - 4.00)

Medium body. Creamy texture. Lively carbonation. Dry, spicy finish. (Feel - 3.75)

This was a really good IPA overall. That spice on my lips would not go away though. Would have it again though for sure. (Overall - 3.75)

This is delicious.

First off, the most intense pillowy head I may have ever witnessed.

Aromas are citrusy but subdued.

Flavors are on point with floral and citrus being in the forefront. Nothing extreme but extremely crisp and quenching.

Feel is dry and attenuated. Thinner and very easily drank.

Overall. Great ipa. Thanks @buddybeerdrinker1

Transparent lemon-yellow brew with tons of lively action. Solid snow white head formation with very good retention and tons of nice lacing.

Incredibly dank aroma, overwhelmingly so. A touch of citrus hiding behind. For someone with my preferences, it's over the top and off-putting. For fans of dank brews, this aroma is probably seductively inviting.

Flavor fits neatly into thirds. Up front is a nice bitterness, carrying notes of pine, grass, and light citrus pulp and peel. The second half brings the dank herbal sweetness intimated by the nose, building to a peak just into the final third. The back end returns a level of bitterness (again with citrus peel), while the hops slowly yield ground to a sweet pale malty flavor.

Lively and smooth; wonderful feel.

This is definitely going to be a polarizing Mosaic-hopped brew. For me, it's right on the edge of the extremely dank brews which I can barely tolerate. It's clearly a well-crafted beer, however, and I think most IPA fans will really dig it.

Drinking from the bottle dated 05/24/2017. Pours with a hazy dark yellow color. The head is average, and even with an aggressive pour, it dissipates quickly. Average amount of lacing left on the glass. Very impressive tropical fruity smell, some of the best smelling beer in a while. You can definitely sense a lot of grapefruit, mango and pineapple. Agree with other reviewers who noted the disappearance of the smell as the beer warms. The taste is pretty great, with fruits, again, being prominent. The hops are very apparent even as the beer warms. The alcohol is almost unnoticeable. I am very happy with the purchase and will definitely by buying again soon.

Pours beautiful hazy golden yellow but head retention is not great. The nose is not very strong but full of pleasant fruit aroma like orange and grapefruit rinds with hints of grass and rubber, like new sneakers plus faint coffee grinds. Taste is pleasant enough but less complex than the nose, bringing in some wood and pine but not so much of the fruit or grass. Carbonation is right but the mouthfeel is otherwise thin. Overall a solid IPA and nothing really wrong with it.

Initial rating (4.02) from draught pour at Davis Beer Shoppe, more formal evaluation from bottle to follow.

Bottle dated 021317 into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Pours vibrant golden with two fingers of white medium density head that had great retention and left ringed and windshield lacing. Nose is very nice, tropical forward with floral undertones. Peach, mango, possibly faint berry (perhaps strawberry)., though I felt the nose faded a bit as it warmed. Taste follows the nose but brings more citrus to the party. Finishes with a bit of lingering bitterness and a hint of astringency. Mouthfeel is moderate body, higher carbonation leads to a tingly/bubbly feeling on the tongue. A very nice IPA.

Picked up regularly at Lazy Acres. El Segundo has been firing on all cylinders the past year or so.
Pours a nice rich light amber. Very little Malt backbone. Hop heavy up front, extremely drinkable without slightest hint of booze. Perfect amount of carbonation and an all around solid IPA.

On tap at The Upper Lip.

A clear amber with a dense, white head with good retention and lacing, this looks solid. The nose is decent. Bright and fruity with plenty of hops, there's also some doughy, mildly stale caramel present. This character grows as the beer warms up, along with the tropical fruit note (papaya, jackfruit). On the palate, this opens moderately bitter, a little chalky and with a moderate hop flavor. Citrus, a little pine and a moderate tropical fruit note are present. The mid-palate has the doughy malt and a little caramel. Mildly bitter on the finish, this beer is medium-light in body, moderately carbonated. Decent.

Smooth, silky flavor of berries, melon, mango rind, papaya. Impressive notes from the hops I'm guessing lot of mosaic. There is pretty much no malt presence and a bit of bitterness lingering too long at the end. Otherwise a fine IPA that brings out some impressive flavors.
