22 ounce bottle poured into a snifter

A: Pours black a mocha colored head that dissipated into a mocha colored soapy film, low carbonation, decent amount of lacing, lots of tiny bubbles clinging the glass's side, look like motor oil.

A: Loads of bourbon and whiskey burn, smells really hot, bourbon, vanilla, toasted coconut, dark chocolate and coffee, alcohol comes through fairly strong, besides that this beer smells really good.

T: Not as much barrel on the taste as the nose, touch of bourbon and oak upfront along with vanilla and toasted coconut, a stronger presence of dark chocolate and espresso on the taste, moderate amount of espresso and dark chocolate like bitterness, finish is dry with a touch of dark berry sweetness, char, smoke, whiskey, and roasted malts lingering in the aftertaste.

M: Full bodied, very smooth, dry finish that leaves a char and smoke like feeling on my palate.

O: It could definitely use more bourbon barrel presence on the taste, it's in the aroma but its heavy on the alcohol, like whiskey burn, the burn also comes through on the taste as well. Good amount of complexity and depth, add some more bourbon barrel and I would definitely bump up the score.

A strong whiskey aroma with syrupy and silky mouthfeel and medium roasted grain, marmalade and toffee flavor, with some bittersweet chocolate and coffee. Sweetness dominates, but some hop flavor shows through.

Small batch bomber. Limited run for December 2016.

Look - Black, thick. Pours as dark as its oil namesake. Has a beautiful, but small, chocolate colored head. Lots of bubbly lacing.

Smell - Definitely getting notes of chocolate, bourbon, coffee, and alcohol (not overpowering though).

Taste - Has a lot of chocolate notes as well as coffee. You can tell it is barrel aged. That Oaky Bourbon taste adds body to the stout. Does not taste anywhere near as boozy as it actually is (11.5%). The alcohol is there, but it is not the main component of the taste and does not overpower in the slightest. Pretty darn smooth.

Feel - Not overpowering or "thick/bold" like some other stouts. Easily sip-able.

Overall - I have a weakness for Imperials and have tried many. This is my first review, so trying to put things into words is difficult, but I have to say they did a great job with this. To me, this is a very well balanced Imperial that is not trying to do too many things at once. If I worked for El Segundo Brewing Company, I would be very proud of this beer.

Vintage 2016. Poured from a twenty-two ounce bottle black with a 1/4-inch thick mocha head which fades to the rim and leaves some spotty lace. Aroma is roasty, bourbon, vanilla, mild char, cocoa, caramel and damp earth. Flavor is mellow and well balanced with bourbon integrated with roasty vanilla notes and not a huge boozy note. Smooth, full body and light carbonation. Finishes grainy and roasty with a lingering vanilla aftertaste. Well done.

2017 update

Black light brown small head which quickly diminshes

Nose: a little chocolate and roastiness

Taste: Chocolate, Roastiness, Vanilla, Cherry

Feel: creamy medium body.

Overall The nose is not as prominent as my past review nor is the oak across the board. But I still really like the flavor and still feel this beer is a very good value at $12.50 / 22oz bomber

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

22oz bottle poured into a Spiegelau tulip.

Pitch black, with light brown small head which diminishes.

Nose: Chocolate,Vanilla, Oak, subtle cherry.

Taste: Chocolate, vanilla, oak, and a nice sweet fruitiness mostly cherry,.

Finish dries out with mostly chocolate.

Feel is creamy, medium body.

Bottle line: At $12 a bottle, this beer is great value. I should have bought more.

Glass: Clear snifter glass
From: El Segundo Brewing Company in El Segundo, Calif.
Price: $7

Misc.: 2014 release; ABV was 11.5 pct. I belive

Snuck over to the brewery while in town specifically for this one. Had tried this in January and absolutely loved it, giving the taster at 4.5 on Untappd. Was surprised to see that they had 2014 on tap. Bottled are coming soon of the new release, so wanted to see again if it was worth trying. Was going to be a rather quick review.

Poured a black color with 1-to-2 fingers of khaki tan frothy head when I got it. Serene setting underneath. Outstanding sporadic, foamy, spiderweb lacing. Outstanding retention. (Sight - 4.25)

Smelled smooth bourbon, oak wood, vanilla, toffee, sugary caramel, leather, chocolate milk, cocoa and chocolate syrup. (Smell - 4.25)

Tasted similar to the nose. Chocolate syrup, cocoa, milk chocolate, woody oak, bourbon, earthy leather, vanilla, sugary caramel, toffee, rather sweet overall. (Taste - 4.25)

Full body. Sticky texture. Average-to-soft carbonation. Long, warming finish. (Feel - 4.75)

This was delicious, but not as good as I remembered it from the previous January. May have underrated it just a tad overall. (Overall - 4.25)
