Pliney Clone? Not even close. It blows Younger and elder out of the water. Best DIPA I've had. Especially noteworthy is the nose, HUGE fruity citrus bomb with dankness spread all around. Get it if you can find it, you won't regret it, its simply perfect! ESBC is redefining what a DIPA is. ESBC reigns!

Appearance: light, pale straw, must be very limited malts besides 2 row.
Smell: clean, berry, melon, mosaic, filtered
Taste: front is a muted berry(blueberry and strawberry) hops followed by astringent bitterness of pine that lingers in a bone dry finish. Awful lingering taste. Absolutely no malt presence. This beer is 8.6% but I feel like I'm drinking a 4% session IPA. This is not good. Taking west coast to the extreme. Too much hop bitterness. No interesting notes except the usual muted, bland mosaic.
Overall: poor. This can't even be called a DIPA. Not to style. Needs to actually have a malt presence, this has none. All hop bitterness overwhelming palate.

Pours a cloudy orange with a huge 3 finger head and great retention. No legs on the walls at all. Smell is alcohol, pine, oranges and grapefruits. Aroma isnt super strong but its pretty nice. Taste is kind of disappointing. Not even close to a Pliny clone, this beer has more bready malt and a lot more harsh alcohol in the taste than Pliny does. Its also more bitter on the back of the tongue and less resiny pine/grapefruit flavors. Mouthfeel is a little thin for me. One major plus is how the flavor unfolds and develops after several sips. Its mostly because my tongue is getting used to the lupulins and alcohol but it has layers of different flavors that come out. Pretty good over all but its' not as good as Mayberry.

Mosaic definitely seems to be one of the in style hops. Let's see how this one turns out.

A: Pours a nice pale orange/slightly darkened straw. Excellent clarity. Finger of slight off white head. Carbonation is moderate/minimal, with tiny bubbles streaming to the surface to form the cap. Nice lacing, with sticky webbing left on the glass.

S: Right out the gate is mostly dankness. Tropical fruit, earthy onion/garlic and underlying pine needles. Malt bill is present, but not quite to the overwhelming. After letting it open up, some spicy tropical candy comes off the glass, with hints of berry. Malt also opens up a bit. Slightly sweet, without the overload of caramel. Smells pretty good, with the exception of that savory onion/garlic note.

T: Pretty good shot of bitterness up front. Berry pops in the mid palat, the savory notes pop back up momentarily. before the bitterness overloads towards the finish. Definite alcohol bite on the rear end. Residual is mostlydry, with lots of astringent citrus rind intermingling with the sweetness of the malt. Aftertaste brings about more of the berry flavor, which is noticeable among the other flavors.

M: Medium bodied. Ample body from the malts. Slightly crisp, with the carbonation providing enough support to keep the sugary malts from completely enveloping the palate.

O: Pretty tasty. Still, this one seems a bit one trick, and the hops aren't expressive enough, especially on the nose (which is odd, since the label emphasizes smelling the beer). Would not purchase again at 8 bucks a bomber.

L: Has a persistent, 3 minute, clingy 2” off-white to cream colored foam cap with gold highlights over a hazy light gold (SRM 6) body. S: Melon, light malts, some earthiness and wood. This bottle is 3 months old and the nose is starting to fade. T: Melon, some citrus, a hint of orange, faint earthiness, traces of mint over light biscuit and grains. The bitterness is assertive but not harsh. The malt is moderately low with the balance to the hop. F: Very creamy palate with fine soft carbonation and a medium body. O: Well put together with big flavor.

Kinda a rough score. Bottled 2/26. Consumed 3/14.

Smells of bubblegum, pine & malt. Tastes the same. A bit too malty for how fresh this one is.

My verdict with El Segundo is that their beers fresh on draft blow away their bottles, even when bottles are fresh. On Draft, Hop Tanker blew me away. Had a two week old bottle and asked myself "where's all this maltiness come from??? Last week, Hop Plunge was the best DIPA I've arguably had all year. Now I'm afraid to purchase a bottle.

Good beer here with Hammerland. But this bottle at $8.99 will never be revisted.

Had this 2 days after it was brewed. I was getting some kind of weird peanut buttery aftertaste that wasnt actually off putting.

Very good but makes you gassy. I can drink quite a few hanger 24 dipa' without feeling so "full". Drinking these reminds me of drinking Sierra Nevada torpedo out of the bottle. After the second one you feel like you're gonna explode.

A nice orange haze out of the bottle (into a tulip). White-ish (again, eggshell? latte?) head that stuck for awhile. Big piney notes at first whiff. I see other reviewers mention berry. Didn't get that. Guess I'll have to try another bottle to see. I did pick up citrus and some sort of tropical - a rounder, darker ... passionfruit maybe? Flavor was just a blast of the aromas with the tropicals up front, pines and malts in the middle, and the citrus closing, mostly grapefruit. Really did not get an alcohol pop beyond what would be expected of a DIPA, just nice and dry.
