The Beers of California

Bottled Date: None

A: Deep orange to copper with a big foamy and clingy off-white head, which fades slowly.

S: Pine and dankness play backseat to flowers, citrus and tropical fruit notes. Some surprisingly thick malt sugariness is also present.

T: Good strong malt backbone which supports a varied hop experience: earth, pine, tropical notes and lemon and grapefruit zest. The bitterness with a linger hint of citrus zest builds to a

M: Strong carbonation supporting a medium, oily feel with a tenacious linger.

O: The ale of uncertain age holds its own with other solid California West Coast IPA's. This will certainly be a regular if I can find it fresh and in sixers.

--> 22-oz bomber poured into a snifter...

A- Two fingers of white, pillowy foam atop a clear, golden-orange brew. Moderate head retention with scattered lacing.

S- Pineapple, citrus, and mango on the nose...amazing.

T- Tangerine and mixed tropical fruits up front with a subtle, almost imperceptible bitterness on the tail-end.

M- Smooth with an appropriate amount of carbonation.

O- Definitely a citrus-forward, low-hop (in a good way) IPA. A very pleasant and enjoyable surprise from a Left Coast brewery that was under my radar. Until now. Perhaps I have found a new "perma-want"...

Had a pint at the brewery, and I suggest you do the same. This is a great example of a wheat IPA. I've had some that were too sweet, and some just not hoppy enough. This makes the best of the hybrid style for a beer than slightly reminiscent of Belgian IPAs, but also takes cues from light-bodies West Coast hop monsters.

The wheat lends a lighter body than you'd expect from a 6.9% beer, with just a light wheat bread sweetness. The hops taste and feel wonderfully dry and spicy, but drops of floral and citrus fruit drop in to keep this from becoming an American take on the saison. Not only is this IPA delicious, but it's a fresh take on the style—something that's difficult to find.

Poured from the bottle into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Deep rusted yellow, and slightly murky orange body, with a cloud appearance. Head is a good four fingers tall with about two fingers of retention and an off white color. Slightly soapy, with a creamy looking top.

Solid hop forward nose. Juicy fruit and spicy action on the hop angle. Hints faint tropical and some sweet grapefruit mixed in with some vanilla and woody like sweetness to match. Very nice, and simple.

Palate comes surprisingly different. Thick earth hop and woody bitterness. Very bitter finish with a hint of burning ash quality. Sweetness is hardly detected, letting the bitterness become dominant and bigger.

Overall not bad, but missing much of the chewy wheat depth I associate with that malt addition and the hop profile.
