Notes: Oude Gueuze Tilquin à l’Ancienne (6.0% alc/vol) is a spontaneous fermentation beer, produced from the blending of 1, 2 and 3 years old lambics. It is unfiltered and unpasteurized, and refermented in the bottle for at least 6 months. The lambics used were fermented and oak aged in our installations. These lambics are coming from worts brewed by Boon, Lindemans, Girardin and Cantillon breweries.

Top of the bottle says "2016" on one side and the other "2017."
This was poured into a pokal.
The appearance was a fairly bright yellow/copper color with a slim transparency. The foamy white head seemed to topple off fairly quick. No lace.
The aroma had some white wine, wine vinegar, red wine, some raspberry esters, funky character, sweet woody tones, green apple tartness, sour citrus rind and some sweet oak bliss. Some barnyard hay.
The flavor seemed to pull all of those prior mentioned aromas together through funky sweet, ample sour, a pulled tart character, adding in some lemon, and earthy funky tone. No aftertaste of anything, just barren altogether!
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with no such sessionability whatsoever. The tart to sour and funky earthiness grips my tongue with an obsession of not letting go but even though I haven't too many gueuzes, I do understand enough to say I accepted this sort of 'feel' here. I'd say a fairly quick tannic lemony tart crisp finish.
Overall, I like this gueuze, I'd definitely have again.

2014-15 bottling. Just couldn't wait any longer so grabbed this one and split with with the wife while picnicking post a Sunday morning mountain bike ride.

This is a slightly hazy bright orange brew that tops off with a tall and bubbly off-white froth.

Redolent of lemon zest, orange, damp hay, and yes, manure. I asked my wife to confirm the latter aroma, which she did, and then asked why I would drink somethng that smelled like manure...therefore the taste...

...involves an array of light fruits such as orange, pear, apple and white grape followed by grain, discarded fruit pith, wet wood, and faint spice. Not as tart as it is just plain damp and funky, which is just the way I like em'.

Medium with a soft middle up front but finishes unltra-dry.

A very complex and flavorful brew that isn't too high falutin' to work well on an occasion when you want something special, but you don't want to be pretentious. Or something like that.

This beer pours a beautiful deep golden yellow, almost amber, slowly poured and without any head bubbling up. I’ve read that this year of Oude Gueuze was noticeably flatter than usual. I got that vibe right away from the lack of active carb or head produced from this beer straight from the bottle.

The nose has a nice initial combination of musty white grapes and tart, zesty citrus. On the back end are even tones of earth and that horse blanket aroma, with a lightly ammoniated, pungent moldy quality. Complex, funky, and wonderful.

Dry, funky, white wine and acidic fruit. Zesty flavors of sour grapefruit and lime are quickly picked out. Those organic, earthy qualities emerge nicely in the flavors, complimenting with notes of oak and barnyard hay. The gueuze style when done correctly is so complex and always tough to pick out every nuance. So good.

Tart, lightly acidic. Funky, with some noticeable tannins and a warm finish. Champagne-like in its carbonation and bone-dry finish.

I had a feeling my one extra 2013-2014 bottle would step its game up even further with one year of cellering. I was right.

The overall balance is just astonishing. The acidic character, where it before felt slightly too sour or sharp, is now a near perfect tartness.

The yeast as wild as ever, the smell of fresh apples intoxicating.

A beautiful beer.

750 ml bottle poured into a RR stemmed glass @ 50 deg f.

A: 4.5 - Huge carbonation, the cork would have never stayed in place without the cage. Large off white fluffy white head composed of large to medium bubbles that slowly dissipate with great lacing and a continuous flow of bubbles from the base of the glass. Color is a straw golden yellow, crisp and clear, simply gorgeous.

S: 5.0 - O god damn Yes! Very characteristic and definitely a classic Gueuze aroma. A nice toasty bterry aroma with a hint of lactic sourness. Very earthy and quite similar in aroma to Cantillon's classic gueuze. Very citric and acid fruit like. This smells amazing!

T: 4.5 - Wow, very smooth carbonation with a gentle sourness and great but subtle Brett funk with very earthy citric notes. Very drinkable and refreshingly dry.

M: 4 - Very dry and refreshing with a slight bitter and a little bit tanic finish. Gentle Brett character that lingers and friendly lactic sourness. Very citric in acidity but very nice and very classic to the style.

O: 4.5 - This is a very tame yet complex lambic. A definite classic flavor profile but a little too smooth and clean. I couldn't wait to drink this but that's most likely my problem. It will definitely improve with age but a must have without to truly get a feel for this amazing lambic. A definite must try.

A 750ml champagne bottle with a BB of Feb 2021. 2010-2011 vintage; ABV stated as 6.0%. Purchased ages ago from a webshop and carefully stored. Described on the label as a blend of 1, 2 and 3 year-old lambics aged in oak barrels and originating from Boon, Lindemans, Girardin and Cantillon. I've been waiting for a while to drink this - lets go!

A: Poured into a cervoise (repeatedly). Bottle conditioned. A luminous amber hue with faint sediment and moderate carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a minute or so before subsiding.

S: Aroma of tart, dry malt with hints of vinegar, lemon, barnyard funk, hay, mild husky grain, lactic acid and subtle natural yoghurt. Wonderfully balanced - beautiful.

T: Tastes of sour, grainy malt with a bracingly dry finish. Notes of vinegar, lemon juice, lactic acid, barnyard funk, musty hay, husks, faint woodiness and earthy cellars. Exceptionally attenuated and bone-dry, followed by a lingering yeasty tartness that pervades the palate.

M: Mouthfeel is sharp, tingly and dry, with pleasant carbonation and great body. Very acidic and astringent; dries the palate utterly. Aftertaste of funky yeast, lactic sourness, mild vinegar and faint grain.

O: Magnificent. There aren't many beers with this sort of depth. It looks fantastic, while the aroma and flavour are incredible. Sour, funky and dry, with hints of yeast and grain. Excellent body. Challenging but rewarding; this is the pinnicle of Belgian brewing and possibly the best lambic I've had yet. The balance is superb - this is a world-class brew that deserves to be added to your must-try list.

Sampled at the 'Sons of Westy' event at the Blue Dog in Chalfont, PA 11/14/11. Poured from 750ml c&c bottle into small sample glass.

Pours a cloudy straw/hay color with a nice rocky white head that dissipates quickly.

The nose has tons of funk and tartness. Fresh lemon peel, lots of oak, horseblanket, cat urine.

The taste has a lot of earthy, barnyardey notes while the tart sour aspect dominates (grannysmith apples, biting into a fresh lemon). Really enjoyable.

I'd love to aquire a bottle of this and let it ride for 10-15 years just to see how it develops. Definitely recommended.
