Notes: We got together with Stefan Gustavsson from Mohawk Brewery in Sweden to make this one. So what to brew with a metal-loving Swede who named his brewery after a punk hairstyle? It’s got to be a big, bad, hoppy black IPL like this one.

A black lager with the hop profile of an IPA – literally the hoppiest beer ever brewed at Camden Town Brewery – dry-hopped with a whopping 24 kilos of Columbus, Galaxy, Mosaic & Simcoe, the most we’ve ever packed into a beer, the hop bitterness complimented by the roast character of the darker malts that make this a Black IPL.

The colour is deep brown, almost black. The two finger head is pale brown and compact, it sinks slowly leaving lots of lacing.

The smell is hoppy with distinct citrus bitterness: Grape fruits, lime, orange peels. There is also a smooth roasted coffee-like note, plus some dark chocolate. Sour-tart hints of motor oil in the background.

The taste is bitter with roasted, almost burned malts. Citric hops, hints of hay and bitter herbs. Light to medium body. The aftertaste is bitter with notes of charcoal, orange peels, bitter herbs and black coffee. The long finish is bitter and clean with hints of tree sap.

The carbonation is strong and lager-like, the small bubbles are smooth and long-lived. The liquid is quite light.

A very interesting mix of styles, this hoppy black India pale lager. I liked it although it gets a little too hoppy after a few sips.
