This hoppy Pale Ale is balanced by using some of the finest Alberta-grown malted barley: Pale 2-Row as the base malt, a bit C-60 (crystal malt), and some Munich malt. The addition of some flaked oats gives this brew smoothness on the palate.
Exclusive use of Falconer’s Flight hops creates a clean, long lasting bitterness. This hop is a special blend of some of the Northwest’s most unique hop varieties. Dry hopping with more Falconer’s Flight hops finishes this fine brew with notes of citrus and fresh pine in the flavor and aroma.

20oz pint at the brewery, on a blustery late Spring afternoon - this is Wild Rose's current seasonal, so named after the former Canadian Air Forces hangar in which they currently brew their craft offerings.
This beer appears a clear, medium copper amber colour, with one finger of puffy, frothy, and somewhat soapy off-white head, which renders a consistent wall of streaky and specked lace around the glass as it slowly recedes.
It smells of bready and slightly crackery caramel malt, buttered breakfast biscuits, a touch of grapefruit and domestic orange fruitiness, and some mild piney and weedy green hop bitters. The taste is biscuity and grainy caramel malt, a bit of clover honey, some understated buttery character, and more floral, weedy and wanly citrusy hoppiness.
The carbonation is moderate in its taciturn frothiness, the body a stoic middleweight, more or less smooth, and sort of creamy for the purported style. It finishes off-dry, and fairly crisp, the biscuity malt lingering like the boss it really wants to be.
Overall, AF23 Pale Ale is a pretty decent blend of two distinct style metrics - British pale ale grain character, and some (admittedly subdued) American hoppiness. So, ipso facto, Canadian through and through, if I may say so, and tasty and quite drinkable too, all the more, eh?

On tap at Industry Pub in Medicine Hat.
Bright copper, slightly cloudy.
Can definitely pick up the hop profile. Fresh spruce bud, with some hint of mango fruit.
The hop is king in flavor country. An interesting combination of pine, citrus, and tropical fruit. The malts are almost invisible which is where there is a letdown. Most notably a few seconds in. There's a watery gap that occurs before the second hop wave.
Medium to light feel.
Can't see myself having a second
...sorry WR.

Appearance - Pours a hazy amber hue with a half finger width of bubbly white head.
Smell - Earthy hops, caramel, citrus notes.
Taste - Nice hit of the earthy hops followed by the citrus, then finished off with the caramel malt flavour. Caramel malts really helped in balancing the bitterness in this APA.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with light carbonation. Dry finish.
Overall - An enjoyable APA by Wild Rose. By far, their best seasonal of the year (in my opinion). The use of Bravo hops and caramalts made this brew extremely drinkable and flavourful. Definitely worth a try if you are near the Taproom.

Another favorite from Wild Rose that I enjoy whenever it is available, but have not yet reviewed.
From their website: "AF23 Pale Ale is back! Named after the building that houses Wild Rose Brewery, AF23 PALE ALE is a nod to the historical heritage of our home on the Currie Barracks.

This beer is clear, golden color, with thick white head. Foam lasts long, and leaves a ton of lace around the glass. Smells of grapefruit and piney hops right off the bat. Some caramel malt also present. The taste is a great mix of biscuity caramel malt, and floral, citrusy hops. Slightly sweet finish. Medium body and carbonation. Smooth, very drinkable. Dry and crisp finish.
