On tap at Greenbush for the release. Served in their signature 12oz. snifter.

Look- Black as night with a very generous mocha head.

Smell- Chocolate, coffee, tobacco, a bit of licorice and roast.

Taste- Bakers chocolate, tobacco, espresso, and a hint of raisin in the finish.

Feel- Thick and oily with considerable alcohol burn going down.

Overall- This is one big, thick and chewy stout. It starts out drinking quite easy and then the true nature of this beast hits you. A very tasty big stout that's perfect for the colder weather.

12oz bottle, generously given to me from a friend in 2014, poured into a Greenbush Snifter.

The beer pours a nice, deep jet black color, very opaque and thick, with a billowy, boisterous caramel colored head, two fingers tall that has nice retention and yields wonderful bands of soapy lace. The aroma is pleasant, creamy, chocolatey, sugary, mild stone fruit, rich grain, just a touch of roastiness. The flavors are nice, lots of roastiness, smooth grain, rich chocolate, light pitted plum, a hint of coffee, a bit sugary, creamy and milky, simple but nice, the alcohol is hidden well, but you can definitely perceive that this is a big beer. The mouthfeel is fantastic, rich, creamy, thick, soft, coating, easy finish that does have a tinge of dryness.

Verdict: A nice beer from Greenbush, a really pleasant beer from a style I'm not super fond of. It's definitely simple, but has all the hallmarks of the style, roasty yet creamy and sweet, ample chocolate character and the almost coffee like profile flavorwise is very enjoyable.

Think this is #13 from the advent calendar. Bottled 10.09.14 and enjoyed from a snifter.

A: Coal black with a rich, frothy brown head

S: Sweet chocolate, roast/char, and creamy, milky coffee beans. Heavy, heavy roast is nice, but for me it's not pairing well with sweeter aromas here. This is the only (relatively) weak component of the beer.

T: A fantastic blend of roasted malts, creamy coffee, bitter chocolate, and more bitterness and char. Pain starts off slightly sweet, then the sweetness recedes immediately and is replaced by bitter, roasted cocoa and chary coffee flavors. Just outstanding stuff.

M: Thick, a bit viscous, and full-bodied. Totally spot-on to match the rich flavor profile.

O: The best milk stout I've had. Just about perfect (for my palate, anyway) combination of roast, cocoa, and sweet creaminess.

A bottle from CaptCleveland from one of our many trades, this one a couple months back (I think) & other than a few bottles of BA Blackout, the last beer standing. 12 oz. of beer with some inscrutable bottle art involving horns & a hammer? Maybe the kids get it.

Pour is dark black with a foaming-at-the-mouth head I didn't really expect from a big milk stout; takes two pours to get it in my chalice. Chocolate is the strongest element of the nose, accompanied on the mash tun by some lactose & roast. Nice, if rather mundane.

Pain reminds me of the anise stout that Stone made a while back & no, that's not a big compliment. Anise/black licorice come on like a pair of Czech porn stars, aggressive, dominating. The lactose/milkiness provides a jarring counterpoint, & the bitter chocolate adds to the flailing chaos. Roast noticeably absent, with the void filled by sweet malts. Really nice & thick, but I could have done with a half-pour.

Pretty good beer with some nice characteristics that just don't quite jell.

12 oz bottle poured into my founders snifter

a - pours an opaque dark brown, like used motor oil except not that viscous. got a thin cap of dark brown head that calmed to a film. thin, leggy lacing in this one.

s - deep roasted barley, dark chocolate milkshake, faint molasses.

t - heavy on the roasted barley and dark chocolate notes, less of the milky sweetness. but it is still there. also faintly nutty at times. has a fair bit of bitterness happening on the middle and sides of the tongue. alcohol taste is (surprisingly) well hidden.

m - full bodied for sure. the right amount of carbonation but a little on the coarse side co2 wise. fairly smooth though with a noticeable alcohol warming.

o - solid beer from a brewery that is really starting to impress me. abv catches up pretty quick though, 2/3 through the glass and i'm really feeling it so be careful with this one. would certainly buy more if i came across it.

Jet black color, the beer is capped by a dense layer of mocha tinged foam. Compact and creamy, leaving behind lots of dripping lace in the glass. Lasting coverage on the surface, some patchy skim remains after the first few sips.

Deep aroma of sweet spice and rich woodsy roastiness. Cardamom, creamy chocolate covered dried cherry or currants.

Ashy char, bitter roast and milky chocolate in the aftertaste. Rich and creamy, full bodied from the lactose. A slight burn from the higher abv, but it's in the background. Lingering hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Sticky on the lips, slightly warming. A nice full bodied milk stout that's burly enough for the cold winter months ahead.

A- Came to me pitch black in color. Half finger dark khaki head shows light retention and ends up as whisps of foam on the top of my beer. Light streaks of lace on the sides of the glass with some legs to boot while drinking this one.

S- Bitter chocoalte in the front of the nose mixes with lactose and light roast. The lactose starts make up a large part of the aroma in the middle with an underlying caramel malt which is very faint. Some hints of darker fruit come through toward the end and adds a little to a light alcohol aroma in the ending.

T- Roasted malts come right through the front with this beer. Hints of black licorice come through toward the middle of the beer and quickly exit leaving the roast to linger. Ending of the beer shows off where all the lactose in the nose went with a baker's chocoalte like flavor mingling with the roast. Alcohol is present but not as much as I feared it would with being such a big beer. By the end of the beer the roast and bitter chocolate flavor balance each other out.

M- Heavy mouthfeel. Carbonation is good for the beer itself. No off flavors were present although it would be hard to tell I think. All the flavors were very clean tasting. Heavy drying on the palate from the alcohol.Lots of roast left on the palate. Aftertaste is mostly warming alcohol, bitter chocoalte, and lingering roasted malts.

O- This for me is a perfect stout which is strong in ABV and in flavor but the two together doesn't bring this one over the top. A nice sipping beer that I wouldn't mind having a couple pints long as I'm not the one driving home from Greenbush.

On-tap at Fountainhead. Served in a snifter.

A - A finger of dark mocha foam settles to a partial cap, thicker collar, and a few splotches of lace. Body is pitch black.

S - Plenty of lactose sugar in the aroma, mingling with dark chocolate, light biscuit and toffee, estery yeast, hint of black cherry, roasted grains, and a faint alcohol note. I initially thought this was a Belgian stout as the yeast is very fruity and lightly phenolic, but apparently it's just their house strain. In any case, quite unique.

T - The roasted malts take center stage here, with some black malt char and anise making an appearance. The lactose is still present, but gets pushed to the fringes a bit - definitely less sweetness that the aroma, and it comes across in more of a baker's chocolate kind of way. Alcohol is better hidden here.

M - Smooth texture, and a medium-full body that seems a tad undersized for 11.2%. Lower carbonation and a mostly clean and lightly sticky finish. Minimal alcohol warmth is present.

D - Another fine effort from Greenbush, just not my favorite offering. I'd certainly have this again as I found the aroma very intriguing and complex. I also anticipate great things from the forthcoming barrel-aged version.
