Notes / Commercial Description:
The tradition of this beer goes back to post-Halloween 2011 when Brian bought some discounted candy. He decided to throw a bunch of peanut butter cups into a small batch of milk stout to see what would happen. The beer was such a hit, he decided to brew a full batch for New Year’s Eve. Depravity has been a tradition since. Each keg has 1 lb of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and 1 lb of dehydrated peanut butter.

Holy cow, this is pretty clever beer! That said, it gains absolutely nothing by being so strong, and it's still too sweet to be good after one glass, but you have to appreciate it still. Peanut butter cup stout, lovely. You really do smell the peanut butter, the chocolate less so, it's kind of lost to the grain, which is plenty roasty and has flashes of caramel. I think this beer could do with out the milk sugars, if they are in fact here. It's just too sweet for much drinkability, and I think the candy addition makes it sweet enough. I really can taste and feel the Reese's in this, intensely even, this will be popular for that reason, but thee could be more bitter roast to balance, and a lot less booze. It makes my hyper. Clever project, but to me it's still a novelty. A little thin in body too, seems insufficient for all the unique flavors swirling about the glass...

edit: they have continued to brew this one and have scaled back the peanut butter with each successive batch. most recently its more an accent flavor than a total peanut takeover like it was back in the day. i like it being more subtle, i think its more of an enjoyable drinker rather than a weird novelty. way to recognize that and make the necessary changes...

12 oz can. Pours dark brown with a small light brown head that quickly goes to a thin collar that leaves a little lacing.

The aroma is some peanut butter and lactose with acidic roast.

The flavor is sweet peanut butter with rich chocolate roast and a bit of slightly fruity alcohol in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, interesting, but a bit boozy yet mild in the flavors.

On tap at Mikey's in Plover, WI on 2/15/17. Review from notes. Appearance is mostly black with a small head. The smell and taste is roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, peanut butter, and and lactose. More caramel than peanut butter comes through in the taste. Intensity improved after it warmed up. Mildly bitter and very sweet. Some noticeable alcohol. Above average carbonation and below average body. Overall, this is straightforward, tasty, and fairly fitting of the style. Worth a try if you enjoy a sweet beer.

Deep dark brown, almost black color, with a denim colored head, which remains for a long time, considering they added peanut and chocolate. The aroma is roasted dark malts, bittersweet chocolate, and a bit of dried stone fruit; followed by light roasted peanuts. The flavor is bittersweet chocolate, followed by dark roasted malts, coffee, toffee, and peanut butter. Amazingly heavy, full bodied mouthfeel, a bit of lactose in the finish. Overall, everything I would hope for in a full bodied imperial sweet stout.

12oz can poured into a tulip. Pours almost black with a fluffy khaki head that falls leaving nice retention and nice lacing. The aromas are pretty mild and subtle. Hints of chocolate, coffee, vanilla and roasted malts. I'm not getting any peanut butter in the aroma department. You really have to dig deep to pick up the aromas, but they do open up slightly as it warms. The flavors are bold and rich. There's some milk chocolate, dark chocolate and chocolate syrup going on. Hints of vanilla and lactose. Mild hints of coffee. The peanut butter flavors are subtle and hard to pick up, but are ultimately noticeable in the finish. Strong malt backbone. Nice moderate sweetness. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is full-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's fluffy, smooth and easy to drink.

This is a pretty solid stout. I love peanut butter stouts/porters, and I can't say that this is best example of showcasing the peanut butter, but it's still an enjoyable brew. It's a nice "Imperial Milk Stout". The peanut butter is there, but doesn't shine or come off as the star. I ultimately like it though.

Poured into a balloon glass.

Look: Pretty much at the dirty motor oil level of blackness under a khaki head that recedes to a tight collar, thin film, and an adequate horizontal mountain range of foamy lacing.

Aroma: Dark roasted malts, an inky/oily richness almost like black licorice, and if you really inhale deeply a slight dry peanut butter aroma can be found.

Taste: To me, this is one of those beers where the main ingredient, the peanut butter, seems to apply itself when you really think about it and search for it, only then can I relate. If I just take a sip and describe what I taste I find it to be very dark coffee roast, some sugary almost lactose-induced chocokate with a very bitter finish almost hinging on being sour. It’s in between the chocolate and the sourness that I detect that bit of peanut butter.

Mouthfeel: Fairly smooth and dry for such a high ABV.

Overall: I wanted to like this so much more but I kept thinking about the peanut butter too much and trying to really taste it and experience it, which didn’t always happen. The good news is that it’s not too sweet or cloying, not overbearing in any way.

12oz can. Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a small, light-brown head of foam. It smelled of peanut butter, chocolate and roasted malt. Nice chocolate flavor with subtle peanut butter notes and roasted malt.

This is a decadent stout as one would assume from the name alone, so it should be judged as such.

Poured from a 12 oz can in January 2017 into a Renegade Snifter glass.

L: Opaque with a moderate brown head
S: Chocolaty and rich, with a hint of the heat from the 11%
T: Bursts with chocolate and smooth peanut butter. Tastes better than the peanut butter cups alone. The malt really compliments the candy very well.
F: Very rich and silky. Not the smoothest stout ever but it has a nice creamy feel.
O: Delicious, and of course you'll only want one at a time, but that goes with the style I would say.

Look: Very dark and thick. Nice dark tan head - about a 3 finger head from a 12 oz. can. Ok retention, nice lacing after it recedes. Foam ring sticks around for awhile
Smell: Not very aromatic. Can smell the booze in this one for sure at 11%. Some hints of chocolate / no real peanut aroma.
Taste: Blast of chocolate and caramel. Some peanut butter, but not as much as you'd think with a "peanut butter cup stout". It's really sweet and syrupy. A dessert beer for sure. It tastes like a mixed drink. It does taste a bit chemically like if a flavoring or something synthetic has been added, but there are interesting flavors throughout.
Feel: Full bodied, smooth, and thick.
Overall: A decent novelty beer. Tastes like a good imperial stout with some flavoring added. Packs a punch. Not as much peanut butter flavor as I wanted. This would be great with ice cream.

DEPRAVITY! Great name for a beer & considering how many people I know view peanut butter beers, apt. 12 oz. can picked up in Wisconsin. You know, the shitty state that loves Scott Walker. Fuck that guy.

Black. Clingy legs if you care about stuff like how a beer looks versus how it tastes. Smells like peanuts in peanut butter. Full stop. Nothing else. I like peanut butter. I bought some today. I’m going to eat some of it tomorrow.

Depravity doesn’t deliver on the promise of its schnazz. As a conisss….consiess….dammit. Connoisseur of peanut butter & peanut butter beers, this stacks low. Peanut butter is low, stout is plain, bits of sweet malt, touch of roast, not much else. At 10% ABV this is way too big for the payback.

Disappointed. Really dull. Nothing to see here.
