A bourbon barrel aged triple IPA? I'm skeptical. Very skeptical. Bottle (341/987) served into an Odell pilsner glass in me friend's gaff in Fort Collins, Colorado.

A: Pours no head whatsoever. Body colour is a nontransparent opaque dark orange-brown. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.

Sm: Earthy bourbon and wretched hops. Wow that smells terrible. Really an awful aroma. Pretty strong too.

T: Rank apple juice and crappy earthy bourbon. Some caramel. Boozy as hell. About as imbalanced as it can be. Built horridly for the style. That shit is foul. The worst bourbon notes I've ever experienced. This is just wretched. I can barely stand it. Medicinal and herbal. Sweet jesus, that's bad. Abominable. To quote Pulp Fiction, "This is some fucked up repugnant shit." There's hardly any hop character.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Too thick. Overcarbonated, in spite of the appearance suggesting otherwise. Doesn't suit the flavours at all.

Dr: Not at all drinkable. Obscenely low in quality. The crappiest IPA I've ever had. That is just awful. Doesn't hide its ABV well at all. This doesn't have any redeeming characteristics whatsoever. I really wanted to like this and I walked into it open minded, but that is fucking horrible. I honestly couldn't finish a glass of this if you paid me. I applaud the experimentation, but hot damn that is terrible.

*Note: I hated this, but I didn't drainpour it. Nut up and finish your beers. There are sober kids in India.

I am not even going to name specifics, only I paid 35$ for a bottle and it was definitely the most terrible beer I have ever had. Mouthfeel was like sawdust encapsulated in some kind of disgusting poop tonic and taste was something like farted-in bottom shelf tequilla. Zero carbonation.

1 pt 9.4 fl oz brown glass bottle served in a snifter, reviewed live:

A - Pours a dull, murky, strange brown yellow color (apple juice like) with no discernible head. Could not be more uninviting.

S - Boozy oak notes dominate. Dull hops are present but indistinguishable. Sweet and imbalanced. Not looking forward to this at all.

T - Repugnant imbalanced IPA muted by heavy oak bourbon notes. Candy sweet. I can't find any redeeming qualities. No yeast or hops. Disgusting excuse for an IPA ( a barrel aged one at that.) REALLY BAD.

M - Flat, smooth, watery. Disgusting.

D - Really fucking bad.

Thanks to wethorseblanket for sharing this one at drewone's tasting.

Bottle # 492/987.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy bone colored head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus zest, bourbon, alcohol, and wood. Taste is much the same with an alcohol kick and a woody finish. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is quite tasty but also quite strong.

i think this spent too long in the barrel, its stupid woody, the carbonation is gone, and the hops which made the ipa3 such a great beer are gone. still though, this is something to behold for the sake of being unique. it pours cloudy and almost flat, but leaves some off white lacing on my snifter walls. the nose is really oaky, bourbon and vanilla, which would be awesome with the hops of this beer normally, but thats almost totally missing, and as such the residual sugars and malty sweetness, which i previously didnt think existed, comes out. bourbon again on the flavor, with what comes across more as an american pale ale now than a monster ipa. im talking negative, but not knowing what this was before, i would think this was sensational. however, at roughly 25 bucks per bottle, i cant say this was a worthy experiment. maybe less time in wood would maintain its bright carbonation and medium body, let alone hop character. its still yummy, and im glad i tried it, but for the money its not worth it, and i personally liked the ipa3 much much better.
