Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Alpha Galactic is a west coast pale ale with a blast of intergalactic flavors and aromas. A base of pilsner malt lays down a delicate foundation for the Australian Galaxy and American Warrior, Amarillo, & Simcoe varities. Dry hopping with Galaxy creates bright aromas of passion fruit, pineapple, and dank resin.

On tap at Beachwood BBQ – Long Beach, CA
04/29/2014 – Full Pint

A: Pale gold, straw-like appearance and mostly visible. Half finger of ivory foam tops the glass with some fair hang time. Faintly etched lace scatters across the glass in random dots and streaks.

S: The nose is redolent of passion fruit with sweet ripened apricots, pineapple, and grapefruit. There is some mild sugary malt cracker underneath but man oh man what a glorious tropical fruit medley of hops. Lots of Galaxy hops coming through. Really great hoppy aromatics on this one.

T: Damn this one is good and fresh as all get out. The Galaxy hops deliver loads of passion fruit flavors with some spicy guava, mango, and pineapple. There is an upper moderate amount of bitterness with a touch of dirty herbal greens on the back end. The Pilsner malt shines through with some bready cracker and a sprinkling of sugary bits to help balance all the flavors. An excellent brew. This is a great session with no alcohol coming through in the flavor. Very light and refreshingly crisp.

M: The body is fairly light with a perfect amount of frothy carbonation to give a fuller creaminess. There is a nice puckering of hop bitterness to the feel with a super dry and crisp finish. Slightly resinous after effect.

D: This is a fantastic APA with lots of great tropical fruit flavor. Really well balanced and totally crushable. Hope to see more of this one. Highly recommended.

*Side note: Did not pair so well with bold flavor foods (BBQ). I found some of the hoppy nuances to be lost once my delicious lunch was introduced.

Bomber into a tulip appears pale yellow with a white cap that fades leaving stringy lace.

Aroma lemon and pine with slight herbal to cheesy citrus character.

Tastes straw grain, fresh cereal-like with lemon herbal citrus pith/pulp.

Light in body with modest carbonation. Easy drinking nice stuff.

Admittedly, I've recently become a Beachwood BBQ fanboy since they started distributing fresh beer at K&L Liquor in Redwood City. Finally get some Nor-Cal love! IPA's don't get much better than their Amalgamator & Citraholic.

Onto Alpha Galactic...

Hate to say it, but this beer is "hollow." Feel is like a Soda water with a little more than a splash of orange juice and grainy.
Almost like a beer-mosa but the lemon orange citrus flavor truly is a watered down one. Exactly like when you add water to OJ or vice versa. I can see how some would like this one, but it was a miss for me. Bottled 3 weeks ago.

On tap at the source in LB. Pours a clear pale yellow under a 1" thick white head which fades slowly and yields splotchy lace. Aroma is tropical fruits (passion and mango) and floral. Flavors are lemony citrus and faintly dank. Light body and moderate carbonations. Finishes clean, crisp and slightly dry.

22 oz bomber into a pint glass

Hazy, straw-yellow appearance, little-to-no head. Sharp, prickly-citrus nose, with notes of tangerine and honeyed buiscuits. Hop-forward flavors, with a West Coast profile, as orange rind and lemon-pepper press up against yeasty crackers and earthy tea. Light, bubbly complexion ushers in a crisp, refreshing finish.

Easy to throw back and tasty enough, but I was expecting more subtleties and depth from the hop-profile.
