Melrose IPAMelrose IPA
Notes: A full-blown “West Coast” IPA chocked full of sticky hop resins. Melrose is brewed with American 2-row malt and a touch of Canadian “honey” malt to accentuate the tropical and citrusy flavors of the Simcoe and Amarillo hops. This beer is generously dry hopped for an over-the-top aromatic experience.

One of my favorite IPA's period. Beachwood has become one of my top 3 favorite breweries in So Cal.

Wicked fresh, bottled 1/27/14. Pours a clear copper with impressive activity forming a creamy tow finger head. Retention was average but leaves full rings of lacing on the glass.

A light buzz of candied orange peel and honey malts provide a backbone for an airy variance of tangerine, grapefruit and piney hop aromas. A twist of pineapple and white guava wafts in and out. Wish the aroma were stronger.

Ah, the malt foundation of this is great, honey malts, tight without any grainy taste blends perfectly with the bold hoppiness, a real treat. Thick, juicy bright citrus, tangerines and grapefruit with a dank pine backing. Nuances of passion fruit acidity and pineapple. Nice bitter mouthcoating and the pine flavor follows through.

Perfect! Creamy smooth carbonation and an easy to drink body, alcohol is stable and complements the hop flavors. Drying mouthcoating that dries the palate for the next dreg.

Wow, the quality of this beer is evident in all facets, the feel on the palate does not get any better, reminiscent of Alpine's Duet with a bolder, more varied hop punch. A must revisit, kicking myself for only scoring one. Also drink this one on the chilly side, this beer can take it.

Bottle sent as an extra in a trade with brabuse430. I requested something hoppy I had not reviewed and he complied. Overall this is a decent beer, a little heavy for an IPA but I've been spoiled recently by a series of really light bodied IPAs I've brewed myself.

Beer served in a snifter, as I do not have the proper glassware for this brewery. I'm a failure at life and the rest. Beer is pretty dark amber, mild haze, white head, small bubbles, some lacing, decent retention.

Aroma is a little pine, mostly grapefruit, a little alcohol, a little malt.

Beer is medium in body, a little sweet, pretty bitter, nice citrus notes on the palate, overall a good drinking beer. A little heavier than I want but it is a nice balance of hops and backbone. I might have it again on draft.

Pours a perfect amber gold with bright clarity. A steady stream of bubbles make their hurried way to the top to become part of the cottony cloud of foam that tops this beer. The body has a radiance. Striking appearance.

The nose is flawless with a tropical fruits, light pine and citrus. The hops are floral and there's mango on the nose. Sweet simcoe and amarillo. Sunny tangerine. The malt is a sweet kiss of clover honey on the nose.

Taste is out of this world. The fruit and floral hops greet the palate first and give you all that mango but with a blast of grapefruit rind. Earthy and herbal. The hops are not too oily and the malt leaves the honey behind for a moment to show off some bread. The sweetness of the simcoe is brilliant in this and really makes the beer. It has a sturdy bitter. It's strong and it starts out deceptively mild but by the time you get to the swallow you are tasting a full hop bitter without harshness. Enchanting! This finishes dry and with a touch of sweetness from honey returned to you as if it had been stolen momentarily. Pine lingers in the aftertaste as if you had forgotten that too and it's back to remind you.

I LOVED this. This is one of the best, most enjoyable IPA's I have had this year. Bracing, rousing, refreshing. Thank you Jay O'Rear.

Pop the top and get hit with strong pine and floral hops. Second whiff you pick up hints of citrus and the sweet malty backbone of this beast. Pours fantastic a beautiful translucent honey gold with plenty of beautiful carbonation and a beautiful thick head on top. Does this baby pack flavor! Dayum strong piney melts into citrus and the great malt backbone brings you back down to earth. Mouthfeel is fantastic wouldn't call it dry but would say it's perfectly neutral. Great beer and highly recommended! Can't wait to try more of their stuff.

On tap at the source. New batch just put on a couple of days ago.

A: Pours a clear honey-orange with a 1-inch thick white head which leaves semi-rings and spots of lace.

N: Juicy grapefruit, orange and other citrus followed by tropical fruits (guava, mango, passonfruit).

T: Malty with a slightly sweetish honey note. Some resiny pine present along with some citrus. Herbal and floral.

M: Medium body and carbonation. Dry, bracing bitterness on the finish.

O: Aromatics are great and balanced with the malt.

bought @ Whole Foods, Venice, $8.50. Had to ask to get from back. Quite rare to find in Los Angeles.

Orange color. Aroma is bright citrus mostly, especially orange and mandarin, grapefruit. Taste is light, yet with a smooth texture. Bitterness is medium for the style. Has that IPA sting a bit in the back throat that indicates freshness. Good carbonation. Finishes clean and refreshing. Malt in the background, just enough for balance. Alcohol doesn’t stand out. Overall, I’m very impressed - very drinkable and complex.

Really solid IPA. It's no Amalgamator or Citraholic, but damn fine in it's own right. Very clean & well crafted west coast style. Pine Resin, kiss of honey, and the citrus is primarily melon with some grapefruit. An old school, arguably flawlessly executed west coast IPA. Bottled 27 days ago. Flavors really open up as it warms. Recommended.

Big thanks to 2beerdogs for these delicious Beachwood beers. From notes

Pours a clear, dark gold, nice topper of white foam, exc. lace on glass.

Med. strength aroma featuring bitter herb, pine, bitter orange, citrus pith, neutral sweet. Quite alluring.

All the flavors of the aroma with a dank hint and light touch of caramel added to the mix, and an almost juicy/almost dry end of sip. Balanced and mellow flavor presentation.

Med. carb., med. body and viscosity for style, tasty clean finish. Refreshing character.

Excellent beer that was enjoyed greatly. Definitely recommended.
