Beer of the Dragon is an imperial red ale with an arsenal of flavors and aromas. A base of American 2-row malt combined with smatterings of British caramel malts make way for these rich flavors to be skillfully balanced by pungent American hops. Dry hopping with Simcoe and Columbus varietals adds a piney aroma that seamlessly blends with the complex malt character. 100+ IBUs.

This is described as an Imperial Red and the current version is 9.6 percent. Beautiful clear red amber brew with plenty of foam in the 0.25 litre snifter. Aroma of pine and fruitiness. It's quite tangy, sharp, really. Light body and hot with alcohol. Not as bitter as you might expect. Nor is it all that malty. It's all about the hops. On tap at Tiger Tiger in San Diego.

Type: Draft
Glass: 0.25L glass
From: Blind Lady Ale House in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $2 (progressive kegs, $2 until 2 p.m., $3 until 3 p.m., $4 until 4 p.m.)
Purchased: Jan. 3, 2014
Consumed: Jan. 3, 2014
Misc.: BLAH called it a Red Imperial Ale, Beer Advocate called it an American / Amber Ale and Rate Beer called it an American Strong Ale
Poured a dark red mahogany color with 2-to-3 fingers of deep khaki tan head when I got it. Average amount of sporadic uneven lacing along the sides of the glass. Below average retention.
Smelled citrus hops, floral hops, earthy malts, caramel, toffee and faint rye hops.
Taste was pretty bitter with what I’m sure is a lot of IBU’s. Hoppy - resin, floral, citrus and grapefruit. Still kind of earthy, but not as noticeable as the smell.
Medium body. Creamy-to-oily texture. Average carbonation. Bitter finish.
A pretty good beer overall, although I got three different descriptions (see Misc.). I think it was closest to the Red Imperial Ale, which was what I assumed and rated on anyway. Either way I’d have it again for sure.
