Had a taste of this at the brewery. Strong, rich, chocolaty, roasty. Wish it had a little more body to even things out.

I guess I don’t have much more to add to this review right now.

22 ounce wax capped bottle, bottled 10-20-17. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both decent enough. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like bourbon, vanilla, molasses, chocolate and some dark fruitiness. For the most part I think the taste is pretty much like the aroma, but with some roasted malt and woodiness noticeable too. I think it's a mostly sweeter tasting brew, but not overpoweringly so. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's slick and smooth with a moderate amount of carbonation. I thought this was a good barrel aged brew, glad I bought this one! I don't think they sell Heretic in Ohio yet so I'll just have to wait until my next trip to Indiana to try some of their other brews. $12.49 a bomber.

Edit on 11/5/15 .... New review from draft tonight at the COOP... All my previous review stands, but I think I was too hard on it before... This is a top-tier RIS.. The barrel was really well rounded with waves of chocolate... This should DEFINITELY see the inside of bottles (or cans :-)

*******************

Big Teku fill at BitterCreek... Pours pretty standard black with a dark tan head with good lacing.. Nose shows light barrel presence with a great RIS.. Dark malt with char and dark toast combines with light vanilla and a well rounded oaky profile... Flavor has all the above and is amplified by a dark chocolate component.. Rich, yet still a bit flimsy ... Heretic kills it normally, this is no exception.. Good and verging on great.

Poured into a teku pint. Bottleneck says Bottled 08-12-16.

A- Pours a fully opaque black color with a 1/2 inch light brown head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a half sheet of sheer surface foam. Resilient lacing leaves a broken ring behind.

S- Rich bourbon-y aroma with some alcohol heat and a bit of vanilla sweetness. Notes of milk chocolate, molasses and dark fruit.

T- Lovely flavors of bourbon, vanilla, oak and dark roasted malt. Definitely plenty of sweetness but it's all backed by a great barrel complexity. The booze is definitely there but it doesn't detract from the overall flavor profile.

M- Somewhat creamy but with a sharpness from the alcohol. Medium carbonation and a full body.

O- Much better than what I was expecting. It definitely has that sugary sweetness that masks the booze but I'd rather have that than it be a dry, overly oaky hot mess. Would gladly revisit this one.

Had at Toronado SD. A slightly thin BA stout that shows a lot of barrel without much base. I got a lot of good elements from the barrel element of this beer, but I just never found the base beer itself to be that interesting. A solid BA stout, but probably not one is go back to.
