A fiery punch of piney and citrus hops calmed by a caramel malty blanket. Very well done red ale. Wow.

My extremely good and awesome buddy Jon Passow, who is the Barrel Operations Manager at Anderson Valley Brewing Company, sent me this in a package from northern, CA about a month and a half ago. Poured for a 22 oz. bomber bottle into a point glass of mine, this beer pours a clear, deep amber red color with a slightly off-white/tan, fluffy looking head that is certainly over an inch thick when first poured. Head settles very slowly and leaves excellent lacing as it begins to slowly fade. Aromas of piney, resinous, citrusy hops to be sure along with slightly toasted, bready caramel malt sweetness that is followed by a some fruits notes of figs and mango. Tastewise, the aforementioned pine, citrus, and resinous hop notes hit the palate first followed by the slightly toasted, bready caramel malt sweet notes that are rounded out with the fig and mango fruit notes. Has a somewhat first, somewhat smooth and frothy, biscuit, bready, medium bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Has a clean and slightly dry finish. Very good balance of flavors, yet the hops do tend to dominate the flavor profile just slightly. Quite drinkable in the excellent manner well crafted beer should be. I am glad I got the chance to try this one.

Pours a deep red with a finger of off-white head with good retention. Aroma is citrus and pineapple with a hint of pine and a touch of dark roasted malt. Taste follows with a hop forward citrus, pineapple, pine. However the malt is more pronounced with alight body but a bit of roasty. Mouthfeel is pretty good, well bodied and smooth, but bitter. Overall a great red ale or red IPA or whatever this is.

Appearance - Pours a dark copper brown with a finger of foamy tan head.

Smell - citrus and piney hops, pine resin, bready caramel malts, fig, hint of mango.

Taste - The hops are at the forefront with the citrus and piney hops providing a nice punch. The pine resin follow suit. The bready caramel malts, fig, and hint of mango play a pleasant supporting cast.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes dry with a lingering bitterness from the pine resin.

Overall - A tasty American Amber. Hits the mark on all fronts of the style. The fig and hint of mango help to make this brew stand out.

A: Deep red almost maroon in color with a dark cream colored head made of chunky bubbles. Great clarity when held to the light. head retention is moderate.

S: Moderate pine resin and citrus notes with medium dank hops and an underlying current and fig malt note with a biscuity aroma at threshold levels.

T: Firm moderate bitternness with pine tree and citrus hop flavors in the start. reisiny hops in the middle give way to a biscuity, doughy malt character that washes away to more pine and a little bit of mango and citrus. The balance is on the hops with a clean finish with more pine.

M: Medium body that seems to finish dry with medium carbonation. No alcohol warming. no astringancy. a sticky reisiny hop oil sensation coats the pallet after a few sips.

O: I picked up this in Seattle after being very familiar with Jamil Z and it did not disappoint. The big pine and citrus hop character never gets overwhelming and the malt profile which comes through nicely, never gets sweet. Very well brewed.

BOD 11/21/14. Pours a clear deep dark ruby. World class head volume, lacing and retention. A truly beautiful beer.

Rich complex nose of malt and hops. A somewhat dank, but also light citrus, hop aroma over a rich malt base of biscuit and caramel. Hints of pine and chocolate are also present.

Medium body with a very smooth texture that has creamy aspects. Slightly above normal carbonation with a bit of effervescence in the middle and a reasonably strong finish.

The outstanding flavor profile is intense, complex and very well balanced. It begins with a complex mix of flavors. Grainy biscuit and caramel lead, but with a laid back light sweetness. Citric, pine and grapefruit rind hop flavor follows. A mild bitterness arrives in the middle which is a complex of dank, pine and rind with a citric note. As the finish approaches, bitter dark chocolate notes are present. The finish is slightly dry with a lingering dank bitterness.

L: Brilliant deep amber brown with a 1” cream to tan colored foam collar that hugs the side of the glass.
S: Malty nose with traces of caramel and chocolate.
T: Strats with rich malts and light caramel supported by traces of chocolate and light espresso finishing with a citrus rind coffee-like bitterness on the end.
F: Creamy smooth with medium carbonation and medium to medium full body.
O: A full flavored red ale with an assertive hop finish.
