Closing out my reviews on the 3 BA Night Fury Variants. Still need to post the VB, but this falls in the middle of the trio imo. DragonTrax is definitely the highlight while this falls in the middle and the Vanilla Bean at the bottom.

Pour: Pours straight black with a thin tan head developing if you force it. Doesn't pour thin, but far from thick like an assassin.

Smell: Chocolate up front with bourbon in the background. Coffee and roast comes through, but not nearly as strong as I was expecting. Booze seems to pick up more and more with it

Taste: Taste follows the smell with a strong chocolate up front tied to a bit of bourbon. The coffee and roast follows with the booze and bitterness picking up more on the tail end. Flavors are very segmented with it cool, but as it warms they blend nicely together.

Feel: Mouthfeel is decent. Would prefer it to be a bit thicker and sit a tad heavier, but not soupy by any means. Likely quiet balanced and right in the ballpark of what the majority of folks prefer.

Overall: Witch's Hat is definitely a brewery to watch out for based on their BA Night Fury Trio. This beer is well put together and really appreciated it more as it warmed. Definitely ties the flavors together well. When comparing to other breakfast stouts or stouts I think it falls between the limited releases of Good Morning, Morning Delight, KBBS, Vanilla Shake Bourbon Edition and the annual "shelf" releases like KBS, Sunday Morning, etc when it comes to taste. I really look forward to Witch's Hat development on this trio as I think a lot of good stuff is to come from them. DragonTrax definitely leads the way, but the Chocolate Espresso isn't terribly far behind. Nicely done.

Draft sample at MBGSF 2015. Poured a black color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted coffee, chocolate, bourbon wood aroma. Medium to heavy toasted chocolate malt, coffee and complex alcohol flavor with a medium to heavy dark sweet and small alcohol bite finish of moderate to long duration. Full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a standout beer.

650 mL bottle. Black body with almost no head. Thin collar. Aroma is coffee that smells like green peppers. Chocolate. Taste is sharp and bitter coffee. Less green peppers. Fudgy chocolate. Boozy bitter finish. Medium body. Not too heavy. Sharp and almost unpleasant coffee, but the fudge flavor is nice.

22oz. red waxed bomber. 2015 vintage. Poured in a Grrrz teku. Shared with schen9303.

A really menacing looking beer complete with thick, luscious dark mocha head, huge, thick lace and a pitch black color. The aroma is spot on for the style and its exactly what I want from a beer like this. Really sets the stage with hints of sweet soy sauce, dark fruit, vanilla beans and rich, boozy bourbon. The espresso is conspicuously missing though. The flavor here is certainly something to describe. Opens with a prominent espresso punch. Coffee all over the place followed by sweet soy sauce, dark chocolate, roasted malt and smoke. Lots and lots of smoke and roast that's balanced (partially) by chocolate and dark fruit sweetness. Everything is good until you get to the end which is still ridiculously hot. Huge bourbon notes really burns the throat going down. As this one warms, the bourbon presence really takes over the entire experience.

The feel is almost entirely missing with this one. Its thin, too carbonated and harsh going down. Not what I'd expect from a barrel aged imperial stout.

This one is definitely all hype. The flavors are muddled and what does come through isn't great and doesn't work together well. The feel doesn't help matters. Pass.

All the hype around Dragontrax, but this is the gem of the Night Fury variants. It's simple coffee and chocolate flavors blend nicely with a good amount of body.
