Had a '16 version on tap, very delicious. Strong bourbon, vanilla, molasses candy flavor that reminded me very much of Founders Doom. I loved Doom and if you do too then you will love this. One of the best barley wines I ever had and a definite slow sipper as it's a hot one.

2015 bottle 125

blue wax 12 oz bottle poured into fw glencairn

looks good in the glass, pretty much no head. dark brown hue

aroma is nice , oak, caramel vanilla malts. this is promising

flavor follows the nose, bourbon, oak caramel vanilla. at first i got a lot of fruitiness and apple but as it warmed the heat has taken over. there's a bit of a harshness in the end, a bit more time would smooth it out

mouthfeel is medium thick, flavor lingers and it's actually well carbed

overall i'm surprised by the low score, i really enjoyed this beer! juicy taste good bourbon. the harshness is a bit tough but subtle, i'm wondering if it is the dry hopping, i still don't know why they would decide to do that. either way the 2015 is drinking food and will improve.

Pours a deep mahogany difficult to generate any head, what was there disappeared, not to worry though, little carbonation typical of style. Smells of plums, apricot, raisins, taste is hoppy hoppy bitter! bourbon heat sneaks up with huge punch, very hot! This is one hell of a complex beer to enjoy sipping slowly. Enjoyed greatly,

2014 Bottle #84

A: Pours a rich, dark amber/mahogany with hints of ruby, settling into a deep amber hued brown. Appears sryupy in consistency with hardly a trace of head (with a hard pour). Lacing is loose and spotty as the beer goes down with a thin, foamy khaki collar.
S: All hops and caramel with an underlying note of booze and oak.
T: Lots of sweetness and booze bursting at the tip of the tongue, loads of American hops with piney/grassy/citrus/spice. Burnt sugar and caramel/toffee move more forward with notes of leather/oak/coconut/toast. Finishes extremely dry and bitter, lots of spicy hop flavors linger on the palate along with some big alcohol heat.
M: Slick and creamy, syrupy, full bodied. Carbonation works well for the style but is a bit low. Beer could be considered chewy at first but finishes so dry it thins it out.
O: Everything becomes more pronounced as the beer warms - hops, booze, caramel/malt - and I am enjoying it more in some aspects and less in others. Definitely a big American Barleywine here with nice barrel treatment but it's a bit hot still and for my tastes, a bit heavy on bittering hops.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Witch's Hat Snifter.
A great example of an American Barleywine. Barrel and hop forward. Will do well with age. Looking forward to having this again in the near future.

A flawed, phenolic, peppery beer. Definitely sits like a BarleyWine. The presence is modern, but not magical. As if brewed by the 'Energy Drink' generation. Look is murky, hence the name.

Super clean and hoppier than expected but it works very well. Complex, yet balanced. Sweet carmely with a really smooth coconut and vanilla finish. Fantastic.
