Look: Pitch black with a huge and billowing tan head that pillows up at 2 fingers and slowly recedes, leaving sticky lacing coating the glass
Aroma: Chocolate, roasted barley, warm brown bread, light wafts of licorice, and toasted/darkened cereal grains
Taste: Dark chocolate and roast flood the palate on the onset as some hint of grains dance in and out of the frame. Breadiness takes over along with a slightly stronger licorice note and then rejoined by cocoa and roasted barley for the finish
Mouthfeel: Full, smooth and silky throughout, medium-high carbonation, some warmth from the alcohol, and some dryness on the finish
Overall: This is tasty stuff. I was pumped when I heard these folks were canning and releasing this as I am a fan of their offerings and always down for a nice stout. Well-made, tasty, and a good depth of flavor along with a drier finish which all add up to this one being a winner. Delicious and recommended

Growler fill.

Dark brown pour, mostly jet-black with some light showing on the edges; fluffy & creamy tan head recedes pretty slowly, good carbonation. Nose is fairly roast-forward and leans towards espresso with hints of cocoa, smoke. The palate opens with roasted malt, impressions of sweetness but also some charred bitterness, fairly balanced...creamy body feels about medium. Overall an enjoyable stout, nothing too special but fairly well-executed.

From a growler: dark brown to nearly black; hardly any light getting through. Lacy dense brown head of foam. Toast, tobacco on the nose; great aroma. Hints of molasses, tobacco, coffee taste wise and a surprising amount of hops. Enough hops that I am thinking of this as more of a dark strong ale. Really well balanced. It reminds me a lot of the Iron Horse Irish Death.

On tap at GoodLife BierHall, 12.28.11. Website lists ABV as 8%, though data at brewery indicated 7.7%.

One finger brown head, medium dissipation with minimal lacing, over dark brown opaque body, no visible carbonation due to hue. Malt dominated in the nose, quite a bit of roast, espresso, along with milk chocolate, a bit of citrus aromas. Taste is fairly complex, coffee more than cocoa, a bit nutty which may be the oats, a bit resiny on the back end.. Mouthfeel is a bit on the full side of medium, fairly creamy and smooth though not much effervescence, not sticky. The complex malt bill along with the cold pouring temperature made the subtleties of the flavor profile hard to decipher. Fairly tasty, though ended up being a bit coffeeish in the end, could use a bit more hops for balance. Tasty, worth a try, an especially good winter brew.
