Visited multiple times during Xmas/New Year's break.

Located on the west side of Bend near 10 Barrel and Cascade Lakes breweries, Good Life is the most recent addition to the thriving Bend beer scene. The sign near the street is rather small, the facility is located behind the US Bank, and in a complex with a wine shop and coffee roastery. The tasting room proper is fairly small, long picnic tables give it a faux-Munich bier hall vibe. Given the popularity of the brewery, especially with locals, an overflow area inside the brewery has been created, with a pool table the only form of entertainment (ie. no video poker machines). The main entertainment area is a fenced-off beer garden at the rear of the building, a nice grassed off area that provides a nice view of summer fireworks, along with hosting concerts and other special events.

The beer is the main attraction here, and it is of good quality. Head Brewer Curt Plants is carefully developing his portfolio instead of trying to develop a melange of beers too soon. When I visited they had a Pale Ale, IPA, American Stout and Scotch Ale on tap, all of good quality. They also feature a nice range of guest taps, including Boneyard, Bend Brewing and Firestone Walker. Prices are about average, though the Thursday locals night, featuring $2.50 pints of the house beers and $7 growler fills, is certainly a good deal.

Unfortunately the food options leave something to be desired. We sampled a Farmer's Plate that apparently featured processed cheese and what tasted like Hillshire Farms Summer Sausage, along with boxed crackers. Given the number of quality creameries in the area (Tumalo Farms) and the natural affinity of cheese with beer, this item needs a serious rethinking. On a positive note, the sandwiches, especially the paninis, are pretty good. I had a grilled cheese featuring Gruyere, Granny Smith apples, and walnuts that was quite tasty. The big selling food item is bacon, especially the bacon wrapper jalapeno poppers, and bacon is featured on several sandwiches, which can't be bad.

The service, especially the management, is top notch, very enthusiastic. Given the large building, and the high quality of the beers they are producing (the first batch of 22 oz. bottles of their signature Mountain Rescue Pale Ale are forthcoming shortly), I expect big things from this up and coming brewery. Highly recommended for an apres-ski beer, it's a scant distance from the main road to Mount Bachelor.

a very cool place in a part of town thats quite densely populated with breweries, which i guess is all of bend, but they seem particularly well packed in over here. we walked a few doors down from ale apothecary to check it out. the place is great, a big warehouse compound set off the road with some cool outside space, a patio area and a sort of courtyard where a bunch of other businesses exist, looked like a small venue back there too. inside its a classic taproom with a long bar, garage doors letting in lots of light and probably a nice breeze on a warmer day, high ceilings and very spacious feeling, and with enough high tables to seat a fair few people, it was packed and loud when i was in. you can see the tanks from one side of the bar looking back through a window there. i get when a place is busy and it takes a few minutes to get a beer, but the service in here was appalling. if there beer wasnt so good, it might have ruined the experience. there were three or four bartenders back there just joking around, flirting with each other, and goofing off without paying any attention to the bar. i had to be standing there for ten minutes in the place it looks like you are supposed to order beer from. i finally had to call out to them, and was greeted with a sort of annoyed vibe, which made no sense to me, really need to get some training or something in here, i can tolerate slow, but this was just lazy and bad. everyone hanging out was low key, and the place was cool otherwise. we sat outside with an excellent wet hopped pale and a unique lager with tangerine and tea in it made for their anniversary. the beers were excellent, building on what i knew about their stuff before we went in, i have still liked everything ive had from them. not as many new ones as i was hoping to see, but we found a few. they do food in here, but i didnt want to risk it after our service experience. im sure it was a fluke, and the beer was good enough to go back for, so definitely still check them out when you are in bend. they have a good reputation for a reason. this place is way better than my review will score it, i think service is weighted too heavily in the BA equation, but i cant not call it out...

(#19 of 49) To start off, this place is hard to find. It occupies a red, metal building that sits behind other buildings, and the driveway entrance to the parking lot that serves all of these buildings is two buildings down the street. (I think it was next to a Dutch Brothers coffee kiosk.) Once parked, you need to walk between buildings to get to the pub's entrance. The pub has a nice arrangement and I like the vibe.

We chose to sit at the bar to try their beers. There are 20 taps, although 13 were house beers, two were guest taps, two more were on nitro (also guest beers), two ciders, and one kombucha. We ordered a sampler flight of 6 beers in order to evaluate their beers. All of the beers are brewed above style, but none made it to a notable level. Overall, we scored them at a B-minus grade.

I believe this pub serves food, but we did not see a menu or anyone ordering or eating anything, so I cannot comment any further on that topic. There was a sign there for Backdrop Distilling, but I did not inquire if it is an in-house business operation or the reason for the posting of the distillery's name.
