August 17, 1:30-3pm

Well, we WERE going to go for a hike during our last hours in Bend, but wife didn't feel like it and SHE suggested a last brewpub stop - who am I to disagree??? Got ever so slightly turned around with our google mapping but eventually found the big red warehouse towards the back of a small and new-ish business complex. Open garage doors to the main brewery face the parking lot, taproom is to the left, down a short path that includes a winery tasting room and an open area set up for an outdoor concert. The "Bier Hall" is pretty spartan, actually - the corner of the warehouse with the same tall ceilings and concrete floors. Decor is less 'beer' and more 'local/outdoors' - surf/ski equipment, skateboards etc. Minimalist, I guess. We sat at one of several long 'communal' tables, on the end nearest the breezy courtyard; a few tall 4-seaters and a half dozen or so stools at the bar. Room was less than half full...subdued vibe but for some cool classic rock at a reasonable volume level.

We both wanted some food with our beer, so I decided on the "Bacon┬▓" (halved jalape├▒os stuffed with bacon, cream cheese...and more bacon!) and S had the pretzel. Those bacon peppers had just enough heat and were really good (...despite my sweating scalp and flushed face - I'm a spiciness lightweight!). Really liked the molten cheese/mustard that came with it, but the pretzel was *way* too flaky & dry for us.

We visited Goodlife mostly for the beer(!), as my wife is a fan of their Descender IPA (canned & available in Portland) and I've liked what I'd had to date. 10 GL taps were on: 5 "regulars" (Descender, Mountain Rescue, Sweet As!, Redside and 29er) and 5 "Super Rare Offerings" (in celebration of Bend Brewfest): Good & Worthy Belgian Rye, Evil Sister Imperial Wheat, Pass Stout (Syrah Barrel-Aged), Scottish Heart (2011 Scotch/Wee Heavy) and Cherry Kriek. They also had Oskar Blues G'Knight as a guest tap. We both *LOVED* Good & Worthy - at 4.5% ABV, it was *perfect* for the warm weather and that plate of peppery heat; would gladly have this again and again! Mt. Rescue was solid, Evil Sister (sample) was very good. We ended on the Pass Stout, which had a robust red wine character - not alcoholic heat really - quite tasty. All in all, I was impressed with the quality and range of Goodlife's beers...

Service was just OK. As mentioned above, the room was half full at best and the 3-4 servers were sort of milling around at times, not checking on or engaging customers. We sat for a while waiting to order food and then again waiting for a next beer...and then again waiting for the check... at around 2:30pm, a brewer came around asking if we wanted to join a free guided tour, but our food had just arrived so we declined.

Glad we visited, would probably return. If anything, this reinforced my opinion that Goodlife is making very good beer. Cheers!

PS: Only one (unisex) bathroom in the taproom, but quite possibly larger than our bedroom at home - seriously it's huge! But maybe could have planned for 2 of them? It wasn't crowded when we were there, but if the room was filled, having only one toilet would be egregious...

a very cool place in a part of town thats quite densely populated with breweries, which i guess is all of bend, but they seem particularly well packed in over here. we walked a few doors down from ale apothecary to check it out. the place is great, a big warehouse compound set off the road with some cool outside space, a patio area and a sort of courtyard where a bunch of other businesses exist, looked like a small venue back there too. inside its a classic taproom with a long bar, garage doors letting in lots of light and probably a nice breeze on a warmer day, high ceilings and very spacious feeling, and with enough high tables to seat a fair few people, it was packed and loud when i was in. you can see the tanks from one side of the bar looking back through a window there. i get when a place is busy and it takes a few minutes to get a beer, but the service in here was appalling. if there beer wasnt so good, it might have ruined the experience. there were three or four bartenders back there just joking around, flirting with each other, and goofing off without paying any attention to the bar. i had to be standing there for ten minutes in the place it looks like you are supposed to order beer from. i finally had to call out to them, and was greeted with a sort of annoyed vibe, which made no sense to me, really need to get some training or something in here, i can tolerate slow, but this was just lazy and bad. everyone hanging out was low key, and the place was cool otherwise. we sat outside with an excellent wet hopped pale and a unique lager with tangerine and tea in it made for their anniversary. the beers were excellent, building on what i knew about their stuff before we went in, i have still liked everything ive had from them. not as many new ones as i was hoping to see, but we found a few. they do food in here, but i didnt want to risk it after our service experience. im sure it was a fluke, and the beer was good enough to go back for, so definitely still check them out when you are in bend. they have a good reputation for a reason. this place is way better than my review will score it, i think service is weighted too heavily in the BA equation, but i cant not call it out...

(#19 of 49) To start off, this place is hard to find. It occupies a red, metal building that sits behind other buildings, and the driveway entrance to the parking lot that serves all of these buildings is two buildings down the street. (I think it was next to a Dutch Brothers coffee kiosk.) Once parked, you need to walk between buildings to get to the pub's entrance. The pub has a nice arrangement and I like the vibe.

We chose to sit at the bar to try their beers. There are 20 taps, although 13 were house beers, two were guest taps, two more were on nitro (also guest beers), two ciders, and one kombucha. We ordered a sampler flight of 6 beers in order to evaluate their beers. All of the beers are brewed above style, but none made it to a notable level. Overall, we scored them at a B-minus grade.

I believe this pub serves food, but we did not see a menu or anyone ordering or eating anything, so I cannot comment any further on that topic. There was a sign there for Backdrop Distilling, but I did not inquire if it is an in-house business operation or the reason for the posting of the distillery's name.
