Poured from a 750 mL bottle into an enlarged snifter. This was brewed in 2013.
Appearance: Pours a very, very dark brown/black and leaves a couple fingers of tan head that linger for a while before leaving a tan layer atop the black beer.
Smell: Refreshing prickly pear is definitely the main player in the scent: very pleasant, too. Also some light malts, coffee, cocoa powder. The aroma is surprising based on the appearance of this beer. Blindfolded, I might've thought this was a pear pilsner or something.
Taste: The pear comes through nicely in the flavor as well, but is supplemented with big roasty malts, coffee, dark chocolate, peanut butter, and oak. Fairly complex and quite well balanced.
Mouth-feel: Medium carbonation with a thick, creamy body. Finishes smooth.
Overall: I was very impressed with this one - the smell was huge prickly pear which is really interesting/different. The pear plays well in the flavor, but does not dominate as it does in the aroma. Very drinkable, and an interesting combo between a big porter and a refreshing pear beer.
