Advocates of better crafted beer have been told not to like corn in their beer. Afterall, that's what attributes to America's industrial lagers total lack of interest. But when masterfully sculpted by a craft brewery, or even two of them, then the taste is strikingly good.

Three Floyds most recent "Goop" collaboration with Mikkel is hazy gold with glimmers of amber, copper and orange. Building a frothy off-white head, the retention proves more formidable than we're taught to expect. Due to a healthy heaping of hops, the nose is chocked full of pink grapefruit, ripe tangerine, apricot, mango, pineapple and passion fruit. Backed with the underlying sweetness of simple syrup, light honey and thin caramel, the fruit impressions seem bursting at their seams.

Majsgoop carries a part-malt, part-cereal sweetness across the palate, proving thin, starchy and tepidly vegetal. Its grainy roots begin to show as the overly simplified sweetness retreats and its naked and somewhat flimsy structure shows. But its the juicy hop flavors that seduce the senses with its tropical and citrus blend.

Medium-full in body, the dryness of hops, emptiness of cereal grain and peppery alcohol provide a drying tone that becomes a standout texture with the racing carbonation that projects with carbonic bite and creaminess. Due to the ale's bold strength, stressed esters and hop complexity, the use of corn isn't stuck on an island, having to solely carry the taste on its own.

22 ounce bottle, bottled on 10/09/2014. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a murky amber/burnt orange color with about an inch light tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. The brew smells like apricot, caramel malt, grapefruit, toffee, and grain/corn. It tastes like caramel malt, apricots, toffee, citrusy hops (grapefruit), sweet malt, grain/corn, pine hops, candied oranges, and some tropical fruit. Nice mix of bitter and sweet flavors. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's syrupy and coating with a moderate amount of carbonation. I thought this was good, although I did expect it to be hoppier than it was. Still, it's definitely worth trying. I liked it.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours a murky orange-brown with a foamy beige head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of brown sugar, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with sweet brown sugar, caramel, and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and sticky mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that really doesn't display any sort of corn in either the smell or taste in my opinion.

Serving type: bottle.
